My boy threw a front shoe Sunday night. It came off cleanly and the hoof is relatively undamaged. I schooled him last night and he seemed level enough. I'm struggling to get a farrier out as mine is on holiday at the moment. My dilemma is, I 've entered a couple of Prelims on Saturday and I'm wondering whether to still do it if we only have 3 shoes?

If it was a back shoe - I'd consider it but to be honest, I never risk it when a front shoe is involved although that is my personal preference

I competed my mare the other week when she throw a shoe the night before a show, we did 2 dressage tests and she was fine. I would think as it is only prelims you should get away with it.

i personnel wouldn't bother, as if you make him go lame, it will cost you more in time and money to sort out than a couple of entry fees. Phone up farrier who is covering your farrier whilst he on holiday and get shoe back on that's what i would do

What surface are the tests on? As others have said I wouldn't risk it with a front shoe, but if it's on an all-weather surface with an all-weather warm up then it may be ok

depends on the horse and the surface!

if warm up and competition on an artificial surface and horse has very good feet then yes do it. my 14h2 wouldn't know the difference between having a shoe or not half the time

If on grass or a sensitive soled horse don't! Dan is a wmip and goes lame as soon as loses a shoe never mind being ridden without one!

If he seems sound then enter. When Charlie throws a shoe, usually within 24 hrs his very footsore. But I am very fortunate to have an excellent farrier who will come out quickly to replace shoes
