Dressing up my friend's pony for her wedding

Hi all,

My friend is getting married and I am bringing her beloved pony to the church for the pictures :-)! She’s a very cute chunky black fell pony with a blaze and socks, who doesn’t mind being dressed up (within reason), and the colour scheme is ivory and lilac. I have ordered her a lilac rope halter and then I am just looking for ideas of what to do with her, she is meant to look cute but not stupid ;-). I was thinking:

1) She has a long mane, so plaiting strings of lilac flowers down her mane with silver thread
2) Silver spray paint lovehearts on her quarters
3) What I would LOVE to do is tie a few ‘just married’ tins to her tail, but may take a bit of practice ;-)
4) Make something along the lines of rhythm beads for her neck with lilac flowers
5) Entwine silver thread and flowers on the halter

Any other ideas? Nothing involving spray paint on her front end or that could potentially damage my friend’s wedding dress!

Also, I need her as clean as humanly (ponily?) possible so that if she rubs against the wedding dress she doesn’t ruin anything. Any thoughts?

Hi, that is really nice of you and I'm sure your friend will appreciate it. As its for her wedding photos (you know your friend best) but I would think less is more. If it was my wedding I'd be delighted to see my horse there with some nice ribbon pleated through mane and tail, hoof oiled up and in gleaming show condition. However, I would be upset if someone sprayed love hearts on his quarters and tied cans to his tail as to me that is quite tacky. But as I said you know your friend best and what she'd appreciate but please be 100% sure as it is her big day and if there is any niggle at all go with less is more theme.

Lol yes. I think the cans is too much too. She does clip hearts and stuff into her and dresses her in pink so i might do a few tasteful hearts (smallish and pretty not garish!) and agree less is more. Any ideas of anything else?
 
Are any bridesmaids having anything floral on their heads or in their hair? Could get florist to make matching browband or pieces to attach either side if she is all forelock.
Lots of coatshine sprayed liberally would mean anything would dust off quickly and a stack of wet wipes with you if the excitement gets to her .
 
Get an old shoe from the pony and ask the farrier to grind off the toe clip then paint it in suitable colours and thread with ribbons as a personal lucky horse shoe .
Not decorating the pony as such but I think that would be a nice personal thing to keep.
I would bath the pony if possible once about two days before the wedding and again on the morning of the wedding.
I regret not having my horse in any of my pictures but my mum had a kitten when I suggested it.
 
A kind of saddle cloth/small rug in netting with embroidery/flowers.
Matching the wedding veil type of thing?
Names of the couple on it, something she could keep.
Kind of Camelot style.

Bit elaborate I know.:o
 
A lucky horseshoe painted and trimmed in the wedding colours would be lovely - you could tie it on a ribbon round the ponys neck so she can deliver it for her owner - if it was me I would probably burst into tears and treasure it for ever :-)
For a native pony less is more - ribbons or flowers in her mane or tail and not much else in my opinion but everyone likes something different - if you know what her wedding dress is like that might give you a clue - sparkly or more traditional
Would love that if someone did it for me.
 
cool thank you everyone! I'm looking forward to this :-). She was barefoot last year but I LOVE the shoe idea, i'll see if she has any shoes on these days!
 
If the mane is long wash it the day before and plait into long plaits just A little thicker than a normal plait about a cm and half do the same with the tail leave overnight the the next day unplait them and finger comb through you will get a lot of volume and wavy hair
And you can get lilac glitter for manes and tails which will look fab on a dark pony.if you can't get the lilac use silver.it looks great too .
Think you might be able to get coloured hoof gloss.
 
Be prepared - take the horse to the church before if you can, to see where you can stand and wait, and get the horse used to the surroundings.

Will they be doing a peal of the bells as they come out of the church? That got my friend's pony in a bit of a state at her wedding, but luckily he calmed down quickly. Otherwise get a recording of bells pealing and play it in the stable.

Work out how long it will take to get there too - friend's pony arrived a bit too early and got bored waiting and started lugging the handler about. Time it to arrive just before the service ends - perhaps someone can text from inside so you know when the guests have all gone in. Think most services are around 45 mins - check first. Even the best behaved can get fractious.

Oh and take a shovel - the verger was not impressed with either the hoof prints or the free manure!
