Just thought I’d share this item on the news:

Although my immediate thought was that drivers pass me like that all the time!

Useful to have it on the news though as a reminder for drivers about the speed & distance required.

The HHO headline for this story is totally misleading. He got charged with not giving details to the police and not having insurance. 🙄

That was all triggered by the riders sending their video to the police, but he got the serious fine and the ban for other stuff.

You’re right, I stand corrected. I thought passing the horses too close was included too.

However the BBC headline & article will still be very helpful as a reminder nudge to drivers.

If anyone has any incidents when riding out, please report it on the Horsei app. https://horseincident.bhs.org.uk/HorseIncidents/ReportIncidentStart. Also report to the police but always ask for an incident number.
I understood the police are not interested unless there is footage?

If I had to report every incident to the bhs it would take hours of my time. I have to ride a short distance on a fairly busy bit of road to get to places and, although most people slow down a bit, only a very few pass me at 10 mph.

I did ask once about the ‘slow pass’ operations, but apparently it’s only possible in areas where the police have a mounted section, which North Yorkshire do not have.
There is also a great educational touring life size model horse which is used at various events to promote safety….but he’s part of West Yorkshire BHS I was told, and they will not take him out of the area.

Just come back from walking one of mine in hand... Not one person slowed down, in fact some actively sped up to overtake us. I ended up walking her on a stretch of pavement for most of it as they weren't even pulling out much to avoid. Noticed it's not much better when I'm on board either. I should invest in a hat cam, but it's sad that it needs to come to that, rather than people just being more considerate

Id keep a whip with me and hold it out to the right hand side 😟 absolutely shocking!

My headcam has been fantastic for getting them to slow. My high viz has the 10mph sign on the back but the amount that only slow as they pass - & often brake hard - because they've spotted the camera, is ridiculous.

Thames Valley need a report within 7 days which I need to remember otherwise you can't upload footage.
