DRIVERS !! NO POLICE ACTION !!

If it had been a human hit & the driver drove off, evidence or not the police would be doing something.

Surely leaving the scene of an accident is a crime that they view very seriously and something should be done
 
Just want to add - I was actually involved in a 'verbal abuse' and 'scare' incident a few weeks ago, whereby a car came speeding along the road and I gave the slow down sign... the driver (a young male) turned around, came roaring up behind me, stopped and then called me all the names under the sun and said he would shoot my horse!

I took down the registration and phoned the police - they did nothing, did not even contact him!
 
Please can someone explain to me how the driver (who has admitted to hitting my horse, even though his version of the events is different to mine) has committed an offence by leaving the scene of an accident and failing to report it to the police cannot be prosecuted. What more evidence is needed ?????
 
so how comes everything is done to find the drivers of human hit and run accidents? the big blue signs etc and newspaper reports?
why should it be different for a horse and rider-we r just as vulnerable
 
I have no idea, I received a letter in the post the other day just saying no further action would be taken against the driver. Maybe I should write back asking how they have come to this decision ?

Feel so so sorry for you, what a thing to happen. Your poor mare! I keep my horse very near to you in Ashbrittle - can we start somthing locally? Am more than happy to support you.

Also we have some very nice bridleways (one goes through the yard) you are always more than welcome to hack with me off road.
 
If you are involved in an accident or near miss always report it to the police and ask for an incident number (even if you do not get the car registration number a description is better than nothing). That way they must log the incident and it will be in their system. At the very least they can always ask a policeman to visit the driver concerned and log it against him on the central data base so that if he is involved in any other incident it will come up.

You can always take a private prosecution against a driver by simply instructing a solicitor (best to use a specialist equine solicitor). You can not only claim for physical damage but also mental damage to yourself and or your horse. Also loss in value of your horse as a result of physical or mental damage.

Please always report any accident or near miss to the BHS (see the web site as this helps us when negotiating for better off road riding).

i would have dragged him out of his car and punched his lights out!! and if i found out where he lived he would be kissing goodbye to his car.......
 
thats because the police ARE NOT INTERESTED my experience of the police has not been good if you can get and officer out to take a statement that is a miricle in it's self.....too busy telling 5 year olds off for riding thier bikes on the pavements, and collecting conkers from trees....
 
Having thought about this overnight I find it very strange that the driver should try to claim £40.00 off you using solicitors as the legal fees alone will be at least £150.00. He woul;d also have been advised by his solicitor that he failed to stop and exchange details or help at the scene. Clearly something is worrying him.

I would also insist that the police check his driving licence, insurance, road tax and MOT. I would also ask the police to get his car checked over as he failed to stop his car and maybe this was because of mechanical failure/problems of the vehicle.

I reported the accident to the police as soon as I got home, They said he had commited an offence by leaving the scene and also by not reporting it. I was given a ref number. I put an ad in the local paper tho try and trace him as the police said there was not a lot they could do with out more details. When I received the letter from his solicitor the police came around took a statement and a copy of the letter, next i hear they are not going to take this any further. This is what I cannot understand, I am defo going to write back to them and ask for reasons.
My insurance company are in the process of putting in a claim for my vet bill, cosmetic damage to my horse and part loss of use as i can no longer ride out on the roads. fingers crossed they will get somewhere.
The police are supposed to offer a public service, I pay my taxes (their wages) and receive no support what so ever, what a joke !!!
