After the hundreds of negative driver posts on here, which put me off hacking somewhat, I would just like to thank again all of the lovely drivers who slowed down, stopped or even turned their vehicles off to allow us to pass this morning on our hack, for keeping their distance and allowing us space to trot on to get out of their way. Of course they all got a smile and a wave in return, and a "thank you" if they had their windows down. Just goes to show horse riders and car drivers can co-exist in certain areas at least!! Even the van driver who came flying around the corner heeded our slow down arm signals and gave us plenty of room, for which we were very grateful.

Has anyone got any stories of when a car driver has gone out of their way to help you when out riding?

no but had a couple of motorcyclists that have stopped, turned off even taken helmets off too :D

This was a few years ago as I no longer hack on roads

To be honnest, in our area all the drivers are really good - Too good Infact! as I am currently trying to get my two year old used to cars driving past her, but everyone stops to let Us go past  - I had to get my brother to drive up and down the lanes past her lol

ah well I'd prefer that to an accident

:D

Being both a horse rider and a 'car enthusiast' - I think I have succeeded in my mission to make all other car enthusiasts ( or boy / girl racers as we are also stereotyped as) around my area horsefriendly.

Never had a bad experience with loud / fast cars - and as I have my name on the back if my jacket more often than not, they will roll down their windows for a blether, or to cheekily ask if 4 legs are better than 4 wheels!

Big thanks to the car involved boys and girls of Midlothian, east lothian and Edinburgh!

Once I was passed by a car going far too fast over the brow of a blind hill. It was quite a dull day, but I was wearing reflective/flouresent gear.

Happens fairly regularly around here so never thought anything of it.

I turned off the road down a path, then about 50m down it heard a shout and looked round, to see this guy running down the path towards me, and a car stopped at the top of the path. Concerned I was about to get a horses shouldn't be on road rant, I went to keep walking. he shouted again though and seemed pretty determined so, deciding I could get away quicker than he ever could go on foot, I turned and went back to meet him.

Turns out it was said driver, who'd gone out of his way to come back and apologise for driving so carelessly.

I was stunned!

I'm very lucky here that a lot of the drivers are fantastic.

The best drivers are those who drive milk tankers, tractors, they are just great, the always slow down for you or stop and turn their engines off :D

The local country bus company and the council bin men are superb, I have emailed the council and bus company to thank them on being so considerate to horse riders.

:D:D:D

Its surprising how many people i speak to who dont realise you are supposed to wide and slow past horses, so i always explain and they say they willl from then on. Its also surprising the amount of ignorent horse riders who dont wear hi viz or thank drivers for slowing down  so im also constantly nagging my yard! i find motorbikes are great, slow right down, thats prob because we are both vulnerable road users so they understand. Most cars ok, and surprisingly, even boy racers have slowed down for us too :)
