Driving a 4.6t box on a car license?

No (unless it is the older type that allows you to drive up to 7.5t).

Probably possible to get down graded, but you need to know its weight to see if once downgraded to 3.5t you will have sufficient payload to carry your horse, tack etc...

I could be wrong but I think a car license passed after 1997 can only drive 3.5 ton before loaded. Most small boxes are 3.5 ton and once loaded go over this weight. Best vehicle to get is a one of those converted vans. If you passed test before 1997 then you can drive up to 7.5 ton so you'll be fine.

I could be wrong though so call DVLA to check :)

How much does it actually weigh? If you get it downplated you may find you don't have enough payload left to carry a horse anyway. Normal unconverted ones have a payload of 2.5 tons I think - so take off the 1.1 you will lose from downplating, leaves you 1.4 tons - but that has to cover the extra weight of partitions, ramps etc as well.

Good answer

To get it downplated is quite easy - contact your local dealer or the manufacturer and they will guide you through the process

What I would suggest is getting someone who is legal to drive it to take it to your local weighbridge (ask council or police where nearest is) and find out what it actually weighs empty

Once you have that weight you can then take it from 3500 and so have a good idea what amount of weight you have to play with

If only for one horse then there should not be any weight probs but two horses along with everything else may send it over 3500

Found a horse box I want to buy, it's a VW LT46 so 4.6t, can I drive this on a normal car license and if not can I have the weight downgraded?
As others have said - your B licence allows you to drive any vehicle that is not over 3500 kgs or 3.5 tonnes GVW

You can tow a single horse trailer quite easily on a B licence but need the right vehicle to do it because the vehicle GVW + trailer MAM cannot add up to more than 3500

Check the vehicle on a weighbridge before trying to down plate the truck, for instance my 5.2 ton iveco daily weighs in at 2955kg unladen, the dailys do come in 3.5 ton with the same cab etc but lighter chassis. so please check its payload before converting.

Rather than faffing about with weights and trying to downgrade, how about taking the appropriate test and upgrading your driving licence?

My father in law owns a skip company so my husband will nip it to the weigh bridge, is downplating permanent as I was thinking if I down rate it for now and then when I've had my baby (I'm 8 month pregnant) and got a bit more money I can upgrade my license and put the wagon back to its original weight??

Yes it can be up-plated but when you do it will need to go through VOSA because it will be over 3.5 tonnes GVW/MAM

All the driving laws make me laugh coz my nan at the age of 75 could drive a 7.5t lorry where as I can't and believe me I'd be scared if she drove it LOL :D

At age 75 you would need to have passed FIVE D4 medicals from the age of 70 if it was a pre 97 aquired C1 category
