driving a horsebox

hmmm tricky one, depends on the weather, the horses on board, the road conditions, the lorry I am driving, in some I will hurtle along at break neck speed with a decent lorry and good traveller, (but not unsafe speed, so to speak!) in an older lorry and baby horse may well pootle slowly.....
 
Oh, I thought it was 60mph for some reason.
Not that it affects me cos I can only get to 55mph if I am going downhill with the wind beind me!
 
Think the HGV limit is 60, but they are putting limiters on them now to 56mph. Can't remember off the top of my head what it is for 7.5tonners!
My lorry only does 50mph tops before a light on the dashboard comes on (actually, anyone know what that means? its an old bedford TK!)
When I bought my lad, he was delivered by a transporter, and his old owners followed them out of their yard near worcester, thinking that as lorries are slower they should have time to nip home, drop the dog off and catch the lorry up on the motorway (coming all the way to Henley so a good 1.5hr drive in a car).
Lorry got her 30 mins before them

It was a super-spangley new 5 horse Merc with air suspensions etc, and pony cerrtainly seemed none the worse for his speedy trip!

oh right thanks, cos i shouted at my mum for driving 60mph on motorway but this sounds ok now, considering the replies!
 
Yep HGV have been limited to 56mph for a fair while now!.The only trucks not limited are the European trucks they can still hare along at 65-70 if got a driving wind.Not very fair really is it?.
 
7.5t lorry can do 70mph on a motorway...if you dare!! And is allowed in the outside lane if feeling very brave!! 60mph on dual carriageway, 50mph single carriageway. I personally don't go above 55mph on the motorway with a horse on board!!
 
Pretty sure it is 40 single carriageway, 50 dual, 60 motorway for HGVs (despite limiters at 56mph) unless it has changed since I did my HGV test?
 
Emma_C is certainly right about HGV's although my new lorry appears to have the limiter set at 85kph rather than 90kph (56 mph).
Also for those that may not be aware lorries over 3.5t registered after 1/10/2001 must also have a limiter set at 90kph. Prior to 1/1/2007 there was an exemption for lorries registered before 1/1/2005 that were only used in this country but that has now expired - you have been warned.
 
The light that comes on is just a warning light to show that you have reached a pre determined speed, 50 mph in your case. It doesn't mean that you are not allowed to go any faster. I do 55 to 60 on motorways in my 7.5t lorry, occassionally I go a bit faster .
