Can someone who is clever please tell me what is the difference between the two sides of the bit i,e, on side flat/smooth and the other side kind of serated. and which way round should the bit be for a nice soft mouthed driver ? thankyou.

It's just another way to tailor it. The serrated side should never be sharp. I've known horses who go on plain cheek (the big ring) but on the rough side. It can make the horse mouth a little more in a dead mouth or just give that slight "edge" to the bit. Its just part of what makes the good old liverpool so useful, a 3slotted one has 10 settings!
