Got my provisional last week, and want to start having a go in the lorry!
Just someone said 'Oh well you wont be allowed on the motorway on L plates'
This has got me thinking now, can or cant I? We are going down to Warwick on weds and i was going to share the driving (If i have afew practices inbetween!) So can i or cant i go on the motorway??

Thanks.

I phoned the people who did the medical for my provisional, a HGV training centre, and they informed me that you can drive on the motorway with L plates, if someone qualified to drive it is next to you. I mean, you already know the rules of the road etc don't you?

I drive ours on L plates (longest journey four hours) and have never had any problems

I *think* you can drive on L plates pretty much forever?! Although I would need to ring the centre and check. I got my provisional over two years ago, and haven't had any stroppy letters off the dvla yet asking me to change my licence, or take the provisional bit off.

You can have an assessment done of your driving once you have the provisional so they can tell you how many lessons they'll think you need (£40 at my local centre) and then its £200 for a days lesson - can do a course over a week for about £1000 and take the test on the last day.

I am driving mine as much as poss, and will go for the assessment once I feel like I won't need many lessons. Although tests now need to be done in a lorry with a split gear box I think, which is slightly more tricky, but not much I'm lead to believe??

Then I'll revise for the theory, take that and have a least one lesson and do the test (once I'v saved enough!)

Yes passed my car test about 4 years ago now! Yes will have my dad next to me. I think i might do some of the driving, as from here to Warwick college is likely to take 3 hrs each way id guess!

Ah so you will be doing the one lesson then test option? I can't afford £1000 and really want to be able to drive my waggon myself, feel mean relying on my dad to take me everywhere at my age!
What is a split gear box

I've had my provisional for about 15 years, you just need to keep renewing at the same timescale as a full HGV licence. When OH eventually gets his lorry plated (ongoing restoration project) then I might get around to taking the test. No point if I don't need to as I won't have anything to drive.

But you always have to have a driver with you who can drive it with a full license? or is that just on motorways?
Mine is an LGV but the year I got my license they had decided it would be a good idea to take it off! typical

I see. I don't think you are allowed to drive anything on the motorways on L plates, no matter what licenses you have. Stick to the A roads.
