Whilst I appreciate I still live in my parents house (and I probably drive them mad!) I get so wound up at constantly training my dog only for it to be undone in seconds by my dad! He feeds her at the table and feeds her ANYTHING. I realise I'll have this problem until I can afford to move out but it's extremely frustrating having a greedy dog that begs at the table at mealtimes. It's got to the point where the bloody dog jumps on the dining table if all the chairs aren't pushed in! Does anyone else have this frustrating problem of trying to train a dog fruitlessly because other peoples actions make it pointless? (Or alternatively does anyone have a spare room in their house that me and Ruby could shack up in?)

This is her pulling her sad food face

Can't you put her in a different room while eating? I'm afraid I'd be rollicking your dad for undoing your training. Ours don't even look at us while we eat!

Or use a crate at meal times.
I once had a lodger that used to feed my dog off her plate. When I confronted her about it she denied feeding the dog until I pointed at the dog begging in front of her!!!!!

She scratches the doors to get out! Only does it at meal times because she thinks she's getting food. Could crate but I reckon she would bark/ howl. Unless I put her in her cage in the garage. PITA both of them!!

And Granny wonders why our dogs are kennelled outside at meal times when she is here!!!!! Our dogs never ever beg, but they never learn to do it.

This is one of the cases where it is useful for dogs to learn from an early age that kennelling or the cage is a just a normal part of their lives....... rather like regular bedtimes and routine for children..... it's good for them........ and also very convenient at times too..

That's the thing! Hard teaching Ruby one thing when my dad is doing another. And if I crate her he'll just let her out because he feels bad. Cannot wait to move out!

How about putting the crate in your car, if you have one? and lock it.

It sounds to me as if your Pa is just naughty...... or does he have dementia?..... Granny is/has both!!!!! Have you explained that sometimes the dog has to know what the boundaries are for her own good.

Good idea! Providing he doesn't let her out. I could hide the keys :D no not yet he's just annoying! I explain it just falls on deaf ears, never really got on with him so this is just his little way of winding me up. Oh another thing he has taught the dog is to get excited when he says 'squirrels' so he'll say it to wind her up so she fires around the house until someone lets her out. Help!!!!
