My mum adopted a rescue Lurcher 2 weeks ago. He's approximately 6 months old. We know nothing about his history apart from the fact the poor guy was found abandoned tied to a lamp post. He's a brilliant chap but she's having trouble with him in the car.
At first he wouldnt jump into the boot (its certainly not too high) hes not on his own either, he's with my mum's chocolate lab. He then progressed to putting his front feet on the back and she'd lift him in. He now jumps in happily but the 'problem' is he drools loads. He doesnt do this at all apart from travelling in the car. He doesnt lay down but hes very steady on his feet.
Its not a problem as such we just want to be his feel more comfortable. Shes tried toys, putting his bed in the boot. Nothing seems to help him.
Any tips?
Just to add, they travel in the car every day to get really long walks. Journey time is never longer than about 15 minutes.

Thanks!

Excitement or a form of car sickness.

As for him not understanding about jumping in the boot - that's a problem? Really??

My ten year old has always been over excited in the car and drools lots. He also licks the window :redface3:. We have boot sleeves so the whole boot is covered in a durable rigid plastic shaped to fit tray affair. You could pop a cage in which is ideal for his safety, also, so the boot isn't wrecked. We had a cd stack ruined plus a speaker :biggrin3:

No of course the jumping in the boot isn't a problem... What i was trying to say was maybe this means he hasnt had much experience in cars.
Car sickness was what we thought, i was after a solution or something to try and make him feel more comfortable at least.

Sounds like he is very anxious in the car. Try going back to basics, ie feeding him in car, first with boot open , then shut so he gets the idea it is a great place to be .

Thanks for your reply MurphysMinder. We'll try that. He's much better at getting in the car now, think its because he knows theres a big walk at the end of it! He just looks genuinely worried and queasy whilst travelling. Bless him.

It could be he's feeling anxious because of past experiences in a car, maybe he was taken in a car to where he was abandoned. I'm sure when he gets settled and realises that there is fun at the end of the trip he will be OK especially as he has the Lab for company. After all it is very early days and he's not to know this is his home for good! Well done your Mum for taking him in and are we going to have a pic. I love lurchers.
