My mare is currently ridden in a fixed ring curved mouth piece snaffle with a plain caveson noseband.
She had this bit before I got her but was in a flash.
I am not a fan of flashes so soon got rid and she does go miles better without it. However she still leans heavily on occasion when warming up and opens her mouth at any opportunity.
Once she has warmed up she has moments when it all comes together and the above stops and she comes together nicely.
She is only rising 6 and is more like a 4 year old in her experience.
Can anyone make any bit / noseband reommendations that may help with the above?

drop noseband is much better than flash as it only comes into action when the horse tries to open mouth whereas the flash is always holding mouth shut. i have one by hilary vernon it is adjustable on the nose and it also has elastic pieces in the noseband too.

You have answered your own question when you said she is rising 6 but more like a 4 year old and also when you said when she had warmed up it all came together well for a few moments.

I would guess that your mare is young, green and loses her balance at times. I don't think by what you have said it is about her mouth but more about her balance.

I would be tempted to ditch the drop noseband and flash and try her in a loose ring french link type snaffle. My boy leans terribly on a straight bar snaffle. Id forget about the front end and work on getting her going forward from behind off a light leg aid. The front will then become lighter as she works from behind, gets more balanced and stronger.
Good luck

As the others say it sounds more like a balance/engagement issue, however the longer she spends coming out and opening her mouth the more of an engrained habit it will become. Some horses that lean go well in the neue schule demi anki or verbindend, maybe with a looseish drop or flash to show her to keep her mouth shut while you work on the back end.
