I use a drop on most of my horses. It really is a very useful piece of equipment. It is really good for babies as it does not put any pressure on their teeth and no pinching of the corners of the mouth like the flash does.
Highly recommended. This website gives a very good explanation.
years ago I used them on my ponies but that was because nobody used flashes then!
they are very good for horses that try and avoid the bit or cross their jaw. you also don't have the restriction on the jaw like you do with modern crank style flash nosebands.
I still have a drop noseband in my tackroom as they are a handy piece of kit but I think everyone seems to be using them now as they have become "trendy"!!!
remember everthing comes around again, just like flares!
thats really interesting as my mare does cross her jaw, she easily gets her tongue over the bit etc.....I may try one with her and see if she goes nicer in it...worth a shot! just a shame as i love my bridle (fashion!)
Two of my horses have fairly short heads (cob size bridles) and I find that using a flash and a loose ring bit means that you end up pinching them on the side of their mouths so a drop was my solution. I hadn't thought of Cruiseline's point about using them on babies but it makes complete sense.
I'm all for them becoming trendy as I had a devil of a job trying to get hold of one recently!
I tried a flash and a grakle and my horse was never that happy with the contact he would resist in the mouth and would need no excuses to move his head or hollow. In the drop he works very consistently and is very happy in it. I have weirdly more control as I know he is not going to hollow and can have a stronger contact because I am not having to be tactful with him.
some horses perfer them as the pressure is different! but make sure when you fit it the front part A)isnt to long B) is above the soft part of the nose.

dug around in the tack room at the yard (left over stuff from when it was a riding school!) found one straight away, didnt get to ride as now we think my mare has a bone spavin in her hock....getting the vet out! Always something!
