My big GSD has a dry nose. He's had it for a while, and it's got a big painful looking crack in it. I mentioned it to the vet last time we were in, and he suggested vaseline. I've been popping that on, but there doesn't seem to be much improvement. It looks so sore.

He is otherwise well in himself, shiny, happy... suggestions as to anything else I can try as a treatment?

You could try snout balm for dogs.

Are his pads cracked too?

No, pads seem ok. Dry but not cracked. Wouldn't say they are as soft and supple as my other GSD but he is 7 years younger!

I might give oil a try, I've got both types and I'll test them.

Is snout balm different enough to vaseline to warrant buying? Juat conscious of the essential goods issue at the moment!

Vaseline has zinc oxide in it so wouldn't personally want him to lick it. Have you had the heating on much?

Not really, and my young lad's nose is fine. I think older boy runs at maximum all the time and there's little room for anything to go wrong without showing up physically! I have recently had to switch him back to wainwrights fish trays from fishmongers fish trays because I simply couldn't get any of the latter. The nose did seem to get slightly worse looking back, and he isn't quite as optimal with his gut on the wainwrights but it was the only choice beyond kibble which would have ruined his gut! So that may be a contributing factor.

I have been popping the olive oil on, that seems to be helping a little. I will also get some snout stuff and see how that goes!

Unsure if you can still get it, but ‘camrosa oil’ is very good. I have a tub of it from quite a while ago that I still use on one of our rough’s noses, which also gets scaly and cracked—especially at this time of year.

I've been impressed with Lintbells 'Yuderm'. Its got colloidal silver in it, and done a fine job mending the whippets dry cracked paws. I suppose you'd have to mind any 'lickage' so to speak
