Dry droppings

My mare had a mild bout of colic last week. When the vet did the rectal examination he pulled out some droppings and said they were quite dry.

He treated her with buscopan and bute and she settled down.

However she has not passed many droppings and what she has done are still on the dry side.

She is out during the day and in at night.

I have been giving her small, warm bran mashes with molasses at regular intervals and her usual amount of soaked hay has been split into several feeds.

Is there anything else I can do to make her droppings more moist and easier for her to pass.

Thanks

I spoke to the vet when he attended and he advised bran mashes etc. I just wondered if anyone else had come across this problem and what they did to help it.

As an interim measure I'd feed sloppy feeds by making up very wet Speedibeet. One of the reasons that droppings can be very dry is that they are too slow passing through the gut. I'm really surprised your vet is so laid back about it! Buscopan relaxes the gut walls so can often bring immediate relief to a ned that has low grade spasmodic colic. I'd maybe try her on a few days of Coligone as this lines the gut wall and should make the whole gut more relaxed. But if it continues for more than another 48hrs or so, I'd be straight back on to the vet - there may be an underlying cause that needs further investigation.
