My five month old springer is just recovering from a nasty bout of gastroenteritis and I'm just about to start moving him off the chicken and rice suggested by the vet while he was poorly, to his dry food. Up till now he has been having Wainwright's turkey and rice puppy food but he has been very itchy prior to his tummy bug and his farts can clear a room, even he walks off after his little silent surprises! So, any suggestions what to give him, he has been a lot less windy while on chicken and rice though still a little itchy, but it has only been five days since he last ate any Wainwright's, how long would it take to see a difference? Thanks for reading.
Sorry, title should say farty, bl**dy autocorrect! Puppy weight is normal

What coat type?

Coat changes can cause itches and some breeds are predisposed to a wheat gluten allergy.

With food start by reading the ingredients -
Wainwright's turkey and rice puppy food;-

Turkey Meat Meal (min. 29%), Rice (min. 25%), Whole Grain Barley (min. 10%), Potato Protein, Refined Poultry Oil, Whole Linseed (min. 4%), Sugar Beet Pulp (min. 4%), Low Allergen Poultry Digest as Gravy, Alfalfa, Monosodium Phosphate (min. 1%), Natural Seawood (min. 0.4%), Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Methionine, Marigold Extract, Yucca Extract, L-Carnitine, Rosemary Extract.

Barley is a known allergen and often causes wind.
If you must shop at P@H the Wainwrights puppy trays are ok as is Naturediet puppy.
The best dry they sell is James Wellbeloved, next best probably Supadog puppy which has maize & rice with the meat.

Thanks for your reply. He's a springer so his coat is soft. I have looked up threads on the forum before I posted but there seems to be conflicting advice - to be expected when there are lots of members, I know. The reason I originally went for Wainwright's is because of it's higher meat content and it seemed generally free from most allergens but I guess I missed the barley, doh! Will give JWB a try, a friend said it made a difference to her boy's itchiness. It doesn't have to be pets at home, just wanted something quickly for now but happy to go mail order for future. Thanks again :)

Personally I wouldn't feed dry dog food without soaking it well in advance. I don't know whether you do this but if you don't, try putting a bit in water and watch it swell. This certainly explained why my dalmatian showed extreme symptoms of colic when on dried food.

I'd soak too, just cos it's a bit nicer and smells more appetising for dogs.

Possibly avoid food containing any cereal: it can cause severe allergic reactions.

Read this (green, good, red omg, avoid like the ruddy plague!)

Zooplus is good value with frequent offers for mail order. James Wellbeloved, Skinners etc are available in Pets at Home and I saw Applaws dry in my local koi pond shop yesterday-weird!

Could you fancy raw? My lot are super soft and shiny on it.

Thanks for the link cinnamontoast, your dogs look fab! Still trying to make my mind up whether to give raw a try, I need to do some research and see whether it's feasible for us. Thanks again

Ask away: my lot look like they've been polished!

Raw is not for everyone, but it's not as difficult as some seem to think and once you find your sources, it's a piece of cake. However, there are some seriously good commercial foods out there: it's just a question of finding the balance that works for your dog. :)

I feed my pup fish4dogs - she was disgustingly farty on James Wellbeloved. We have ventured into the world of raw by feeding Nature's Own frozen raw food, it comes in little cubes and puppy loves it!

My cat is transformed on raw (intolerant to gluten and rice, plus red meat!!) - we have Forthglade multipacks of ground meat, really cheap and we have two flavours that he can and will eat  - very fussy cat! He also has a rice free biscuit but as a very small part of the diet. He didn't thrive at all on any commercial foods. I got to the bottom of the intolerances thanks to Dave at Healthy Pets in Blandford who does hair testing...all rather wacky and "fluffy" but it worked!

Hi there (it's me, in disguise! :) My dog, Chloe use to get very itchy. We changed to a lower protein dry food. Anything with lower protein helped her skin. :)

P@H also do Wafcol Salmon and Potato which has no cereal in at all and my pup loved it-(he's now on the adult version) but you can get it even cheaper on line. A spinger would probably only need one bag every 2 months so at £39.99 a bag its good value.

I've posted before, but i'm so happy with this dog food after my lab developed an extreme reaction to JWB - think exploding bloody diarrhea (can never spell it) and vomiting in the space of 24 hours, after eating it fine for weeks.
Pro-biotic vet diet to settle her, and a failed attempt of re-introducing a small handful of JWB, and we're now on this for the last 3 1/2 years - http://naturaldogfoodcompany.com/
Have a good read of the site and testamonials.

I have to add, I always add water to mine to make sure she's carry water when she eats them - helps that as a lab she eats them immediately.

They are delivered by FEDEX and arrive the next day if ordered by noon - although they have a list of stockists too
