Here's something I've not come across before, but apparently few folks on my yard are drying out haylege to give to their horses as it apparently reduces the amount of protein.

Is this right and why wouldn't you just feed hay

What people feed their horses is entirely their business so I'm not saying its right or wrong. If anyone could give me an idiots ;) proof version of the science behind it, I'd like to understand it just for my own curiosity :).

Doesnt drying out haylage make it into hay. Are they thinking along the lines of older hay has less nourishment therfore dried haylage into hay has less nourishment ??? Not sure if it the case or not...... and wouldnt be as dusty as hay ?

The only time ive dried haylage is when mine were in during the summer days and it was going off quickly, I would spread it across my spare stable floor and turn it untill dry.
