How do these work? Is there just those strap bits over the nose which tighten?

And can you also use it like a normal headcollar (ie. clip onto a usual ring so you can choose when you want control or not).

Basically I want a head collar for taking one of my horses out, I have a string controller halter which works well but I cant tie him up in it.

I used a dually when braking in my 15.3hh mare. It has a strap over the nose that you can use for more control when leading etc although it also has the regular nosewhich allows you to tie up. I didn't need to use it for too long but it was really handy.

I use one daily on my horse as he likes to charge off. He rarely tries with this on, so I think it's great.

You can tie up wiht the normal ring but also use the rope type strap which goes over the nose for more control. Really rate it. If you buy one be aware that the sizes come up big.

I recon (having bought one at a demo that my horse took part in) that you would be just as well to put the rope on one of the side rings and over the nose through the other side ring and make your own!!!!!

That is really the only difference between a dually and normal headcollar.

Yes it gets results but not because of any magical properties it has,,, just because there is a bit of nose pressure.......how many of us have 'put a rope over the nose' in times of need.... monty has just made it a permanant addition.

My black dually (£40 later) currently lives in my lunge box, as this is the only use i have had for it in the last 12 months.... it needs a loving new home, any offers!!!

I disagree with this entirely. The Dually halter is amazing and has stopped me from being injured many a time. I have always had a problem with my horse pulling away when being turned out, we tried chifney, rope over node, rope through mouth, feed, ve nice halter, you name it we tried it and nothing worked til I got the dually halter and he never pulls away now. A rope over the nose does not release like a dually halter and can quite seriously injure a horse. In answer to your question yes you can use it like a normal headcollar but i would be careful tying up in it just incase he got it caught up. Good luck!!

I really rate mine. Like Caritas I've tried many things & found this is the only one that regularly works on my horse. Normally he's good so he's led with slack in the rope & the Dually has no effect but when he isn't the effect is instant, as is the release to reward him for giving in. For this reason he never seems to feel it's unfair & so it gives me control without provoking him. I must admit I was amazed at how successful it was - I tried one expecting it not to work & I'm not sure which of us was the most stunned!

A rope over his nose just infuriates him - makes him play up if you put it on when he's behaving but you don't have time to put it on if you wait until he's being a git. A chiffney was useless as he seemed quite prepared to run through it even when used by a very experienced person & I was then stuck with a loose horse wearing a chiffney & lung line. A bridle works reasonably well but is a fiddle & in his case has to be fitted with a noseband or he opens his mouth & it's useless. Various other pressure & controller halters produced various evasions, usually on the theme of rearing or barging into his handlers.

Hi,

All i was saying is that the only difference is the nose piece, so i think that putting the rope from one side over the nose and through the other side ring, which can be left like this, then it will have roughly the same effect as the dually, i was not suggesting wrapping the rope round the horses face.

Obviously you would not be able to use a thick rope or it would not release, by the same token a skinny rope would not be a good idea either..... just to pre empt any comments on that score.

I bought my dually for helping with a clipping phobia, which sadly it does not help with..... i am lucky in that on the ground my boy is usually very well behaved.
