Hi my youngster is really bad at going into reverse whenever he is unsure about something, ie going into a trailer and sometimes with the vet, farrier etc. Its fine if I've got someone to help me and go behind him but if I'm on my own It's impossible.
He had a bad cut last year and was on box rest but I was just letting him have a little walk around the clean concrete area outside his stable, but one day I had to wait 45 mins in the pouring rain for OH to finish work to help me get him back into stable as everytime I tried to walk him on he kept backing into the mud and I was wanting to keep his cut clean. It was so frustrating I was in tears, I've never let a horse get on top of me like this before but he knows he's bigger and stronger than me.
Anyway does anyone think a dually type headcollar would help? Thought I'd ask before I splash out and find it's for something different all together. He doesn't rear or anything just keeps walking backwards.

In my experience youngsters running backwards means one thing - they are frightened or unsure of what's going on. Whilst a Dually or similar may give you more control, it may be wiser to look at the reasons why your youngster does this - and consider ways in which you may be contributing to it, and what you can do to allay his fears. The heavy handed route very rarely works, and just results in you having an even more unmanagable horse.

Do you have some people around you that can give you some help on how to deal effectively with such a young horse??

does the dually not just control the nose? you might find he still keeps backing up although it continues to tighten, especially if he's not been taught to yield to pressure, would be more tempted to try a rope type halter and ground work as suggested above. have you tried having a small piece of rope to use to encourage him forward (NOT to use ON him) but just swish gently at his bum when he tries to back up?
