Can anybody tell me what their use is please?

I am also interested in how they work.

I have a rather large filly who is getting too big for her boots and pitting her strength against me!

It works as a pressure and release system, and does actually release unlike many other so called pressure headcollars! They are sized by colour so dont buy red because u like the colour - thats the small size, black is medium, blue is humongous!

Id also suggest you are working with a 12ft line rather than a normal 6ft leadrope as you then have much better chance of controlling her, rather than running out of rope and having to chase after her!

It comes with an instructional dvd so you are shown how it works and how it corrects the horses behaviour by making it uncomfortable to be in the wrong place, and comfy when they get it right.

As with anything though it is a tool and the most important thing is that you are the handler are consistent everytime you do something with the horse - anything else is confusing and she wont know what she is or isnt allowed to do.

You'd also benefit from Kelly Marks book Perfect Manners which is also sold at the IH shop :)

I bought a Dually for my four year old who was a pain to load, she planted, reared and ran back. As soon as I use the dually she did a couple of small bunny hop rears then realised it was more comfy to do as asked and within 10 mins she was going in and out like a pro.

Basically it puts pressure across the nose until they do as asked and it releases itself when they are good. You get a dvd with it from Intelligent Horse showing how to fit and use it. Would certailnly sort out a rude bargy horse pretty quickly.

Monty roberts has a mini tour Jan/Feb, if you can get to one of those you will see how he gets it to work and its a great show.

Best £45 I have spent for a long time.

with the rope running across the nose I doubt you can release the pressure immediately or as easily as with the dually.

Its a really useful tool imo, had very good results with bolshy cob she leads so much better now and doesn't drag you all over the place like she did before and this in a normal headcollar now, only need to use the dually now and again has she has learnt the respect.

- its all about applying slight pressure until they do what you want for example if you wanted to teach the horse to go backwards apply small pressure the minute they start to move their hooves release pressure = reward.

It's very effective against loading problems as well - also used it for riding.

Ok! that sounds good. I'll give it a go!

What size would your recommend? There seems to be a lot of confusion :)

I am thinking a black (medium one) for my 16hh + ID/TB? She is just and just into an xfull bridle purely to give her forehead and ear room.

Any advice?

I have the Black Dually which fits my 16.1 MW German WB and it also fitted my 16.3 Danish WB just.

Just make sure that when you fit the Dually you make sure it is high enough (they fit higher up than your standard head collar), the rope part must be not be on the soft part of the nose.

i use the black one on my 17.2 ISH so i think that would be the right size for you it has also been used on a 14.2hh, the only blue one i have seen being used was on a 16.2hh cob x draft horse that had a massive head:)

Def different to just running a leadrope around the nose. Its not only the headcollar its the guidance you get with it which teaches you how to use it properly - make sure you watch it!

I think you'd be ok in a black, my mare is a full bridle and in the black, the only time Ive used a blue was on a 17.2 gelderlander who have large heads usually.

My friend has one and tbh i find it an overpriced headcollar with little benefit. However, this maybe because i dont know how to use it!

Could be ;)

I'm hoping it will help with my tank of a 2 3/4 y/o!

To my mind, I have put her in a rope halter which she is a bit upset by. I can't tie up in it, would have to change headcollar and I think chains across the nose are a bit much at her age, I would rather get her respecting me more gently!

I am thinking this can become her headcollar and I can change the leadrope position depending on what mood I find her in!

I have the black one and used to ride in it when I was trying the bitless route. He went really well in it. I've used it when he was on boxrest and getting ar$y.

In my case I don't use it everyday as I hate buckles and perfer knots on rope halters. Plus they are so much lighter and easier to put on (you have to hold the rope out the way especially if you've got a nibbler!)

However I do really like the dually for lunging, and for leading one horse off another, so they have other uses as well as training.

I used to use mine on my tricky loader. Although you must never ever tie your horse up with your rope attached to the Dually rope, I travelled my boy once in his Dually with the rope attached to the headcollar ring. The Dually rope actually rubbed his face, so from then on when I loaded him, I changed to a regular headcollar and never travelled in a Dually again.
