Hi There,

My horse seems to have quite a dull and flaky coat at the moment. He has good grass and gets fed Baileys topline 17 with pink powder at the moment. He is wormed upto date but in his previous home wasn't regulary wormed.
There is lots of midges in his field at dusk and he seems to have quite alot of bumps and scabs under his girth area and on his shoulders but I can't keep a fly sheet on him because he tears them constantly.
Do you think the dull, flaky coat could have something to do with the midges? I use 'no bother' which is a specially desingned fly spray created in the Highlands of Scotland but can anyone recommend other sprays.

Thanks in advance

He could be thinking of changing his coat. My horse started moulting about four weeks ago and is already looking very scruffy, all of the shiny coat seems to have gone leaving only the darker coarser hair. Do you feed him any oil? Sunflower oil usually helps.

Hi Tass,

I think you might be onto something. He usually doesn't turn all scabby and dull

but maybe with the ridiculous weather we have been having hes a little confused!!
I was just a little worried that it may be an allergic reaction or something but I think you might be right.

Thankyou

Try feeding some Linseed oil daily, it is super good at improving both skin and coat condition.

May I recommend brewers yeast, instant linseed and black sunflower seeds. I would also try a good bath with a few drops of tea tree, lavender and peppermint oil mixed into a mild shampoo.

If you want to splash out, there is an excellent shampoo from Equss which you can get from tailgator.co.uk.

I have used shampoo and supplements on Cairo and Chancer who have not had such itchy tails this year and their coats gleam.

If you want just one supplement, then Feedmark's equidermis is excellent though not cheap - but again gave very good results with Cairo.
