My memory is pants and I just can't remember at what age we let Jake and Brig off the lead and how much exercise they were allowed to run free.

At what age should I allow them off-lead and how long should they be allowed to run round? They're 5 months now.

I long lined them this weekend (all they wanted to do was play fight!) and their recall appears good, fingers crossed.

They weigh 16kg and 16.5kg (Bear is the bigger). Given that Brig is 20kg, not the biggest Springer I've ever seen, he's not going to be the 'big dog' for much longer! They're both very cuddly, although Zak will take himself into the kitchen for a bit of 'me' time.

Our puppies have always been off the lead from the second they can go out on walks, stops them from going 'wooooohoooooo I'm off the lead' Also means you can instill being their recall when they are young enough to be scared of venturing off too far.
Not that that helps you though :o :D

For off-lead, free-running and not forced on lead exercise I think it's 5 minutes for every month of age.
 
Trying to think back 13years ago when we first got our Springer....

We always took her to puppy classes and practiced recall there, I remember we all used to let them off (think 15 odd puppies running around!) and then call them back individually with treats.
Tess has always been walked in a very large forest and we have not had to worry to much about her getting on the road. She has always been walked off the lead from pretty early on... Mainly as she is shocking on the lead! Will do a beautiful obidence test but walking on the lead generally is shocking! She will always come back when you call, or used to... She is now deaf but keeps such a close eye on me that I never have to worry. If she gets a bit rusty I take a pack of treats and practice recalls during the walk.

I would start letting them off the lead for short periods, calling them back and rewarding (food is the way to their heart lol!) putting back on lead, walking a bit and then letting off again. Hopefully you can find somewhere fairly encloased to start with. Hope that helps a little... I doubt you will have many problems. Have no idea how long they should be off the lead for though!

They are so cute :) I want one!! And sounds like they are going to be big guys :o Tess weighed in she was spayed (at 3 I think?) at 15kg. She went upto about 20kg when we were not to hot on her weight but the last two years she is back down to 15-16kg :)
