Now would I be a Kentish lass, or a lass of Kent?

What colour are they at birth?

I have come into my possesion a very nice dun colt, who atm is ginger! Having assumed he'd be red dun, imagine my surprise that under the baby fluff, his dorsel stripe and legs are black!!

He's still got a ginger mane and tail, for the moment.

Are duns usually born ginger?

I've seen two one was a mousey colour and darkened to a chocolate dun. The other was more of a creamy colour and he went to a really golden dun. Neither had black legs etc... when born.

Depends really - are you talking about true dun, or are you talking about what people call dun but isn't - i.e. buckskin, like you see in Welsh ponies - all 'dun' welsh are actually buckskin. There is no known/proven case of dun in welsh as far as I know.

Buckskins do seem to vary a little when born, and even in appearance as adults. Duns on the other hand, not so much. I've bred a blue dun, and she was born a sort of mousey/biscuity colour, and didn't go blue until she shed her foal coat. I've also bred several chestnut duns, and they were all born most definitely chestnut. Bay duns I've not bred yet, but those I've seen, they were similar ish in appearance to blue duns, perhaps slightly redder - do you have pics of yours?

You can see his Mummy is definantly dun!

his legs are definantly black, and at the top of his tail so is his dorsal stripe. But all the creamy baby fluffy is going dark, and his mane is stayin ginger!

Ours is only 3 months old, so hopefully will become more obvious in the next few weeks.

I'm just curious to know if anyone else had one who's black bits were chestnut when they were little!

Last years colt was born bright bay and is now chocolate bay, so I know there's some change that goes on - but he had the black mane and tail!

You need to talk to Tia I reckon. Her foal Legacy was born chesnut (I think) and is now a bay roan or similar so her chestnut mane must have turned black...

He's gonna be a very weird colour then, lou!! I honestly promise that his legs and stripe are black!!!

Also, cos I know you Lou and I know you'll be honest... do you think we could make a jumper out of him? He's 3 months, legs as long as his mum's and jumps the fence for giggles?? I don't think he's going to be classy enough for dressage (which is my sister's thang) but I think he could jump!
