Duplicate passport

Hi. I've managed to find my daughters pony she used to ride at the local riding school. She was sold to a family 3 years ago. She's up for sale. She is apparently being neglected and the family who bought her are horrible. I want to buy her but the woman says her passport was in a mini bus that was stolen. I know this mare so I know she isn't stolen but she is also being neglected where she is. I also know it's illegal to sell a horse without a passport. But the woman won't pay out for a duplicate. Is it easy to get a duplicate passport even though I am not sure of her breeding record? All I know is she is a part bred section a.

Sorry for the long winded question!!!

TIA

Its easy enough - and the offense is selling without a passport, not buying so you are clear there too.

If she has a chip or you know the original passport issuing authority you simply apply to them for a duplicate. If she is not chipped or you don't know who the issuing authority was (or indeed if they no longer have authority to issue passports) simply get her a new one with whichever society you choose. You don't need to know anything more about her to do that - although if she is not chipped she will need to be. Sadly the passport rules are so lax and poorly enforced that you can drive a coach and horses through it - no pun intended!

Go ahead and buy her.....

it is very easy to get a duplicate - easy peazy and they don't do thorough checks either. Trading Standards are useless too they don't do anything anyway.

Thanks. I've bought her . I've been told an 18st man had ridden her! She's only 12h at best. They said they weren't sure where she was registered but thought it was a blue book. Any idea which one it is? X

A lot of them are blue I'm afraid! The most likely are either an old style BHS passport which is blue with gold writing and the BHS logo on the front. Or a Pet ID passport which is slightly lighter blue and has a picture of a horse on the front. Both the British Warmblood society and the Scottish Sport horse authority were at one point issuing blue passports too - but they weren't that common. I have an ISH and his passport is blue too! Some breed societies issue blue passports for a partially recorded bloodline.

The easiest thing to do is to have the vet scan her. If she has a chip it will give the passport authority and you can get a duplicate. If not then just chip her and get a passport from whichever society suits. Pet ID are probably the easiest.

Good luck with her

Just checked the Welsh Pony & Cob Society just in case and their passports seem to be green - so we can probably rule that one out!

Hi

I now have her chip number. How will I know which society she is registered with? Is there a central register or do I need to ring them all up and ask?

Thanks
Sam :)

You contact the company who own the chip record. Your vet will have their phone number. They should know her registered name and passport number. You then get a duplicate if the issuing authority still exist; or use the chip number to get a new one if they don't.
