dust mite free bedding

ok im stuck my horse has been itching like crazy he will bite his skin open, he has just had the blood allergy test done and its come back as highly allergic to household dust mites
he doesnt cough just itches
Advice from the vet is to keep him rugged, remove his straw bed and keep him on rubber mats, but he is a very wet smelly horse, the stable doesnt drain well. so I need some bedding to absorb urine
any ideas
Leaving hm out 24/7 is not an option

Came across your post whilst researching allergy for a dog! But sadly know the horrors of mite allergy in horses too. Wonder how things have progressed since you first posted. Mites are a devil to get rid of - presume you have done the washing in Selsun shampoo to get rid of them from the horse. ( selsun is human use anti-dandruff product that is exactly the same as that for horse mite. Leave on for 15 mins then rinse off) then weekly applications of DE ( diatomaceous earth - a mineral type product, fine powder which 'cuts' the outer skin of the mites at microscopic level). You would need to make sure all horse rugs, bandages etc are mite free ( wash at 40+c) and keep them in plastic bags when not in use. Stable needs to be treated with DE too. Can be mixed into a wet paste and brushed into corners etc. Search Mites on the forum and you'll see some of my previous posts with links for sellers of DE. I agree with vet re straw bedding - full of the little b's. Also can be on hay so I steam it. Rugged? Yes, as long as they are mite free. Mine are on rubber mats with sawdust layer to absorb the wee and fine layer of wood chips onto. My horse can pee for the UK and still find sawdust/ woodpellets do the job. Best of luck.
