I really need to dust my mare's stable as she spent the winter bedded on wood pellets which got really dusty and she now has breathing issues. (I am soaking everything she eats but her stable needs sorting in conjunction with this regime.)

I have to admit that dusting stables has never been that high on my list of priorities and so there are LOTS of cobwebs plus a thick layer of dust all over the roof beams and ledges. The constructional wood in the stables is not smooth planed and so the surfaces are fairly rough making the dust really quite difficult to get rid of. Hosing isn't an option and I have tried wiping down with a wet sponge but it doesn't seem to be very effective, as soon as it dries it still looks pretty dusty. The cobwebs are a nightmare too, they cling like mad!

Can anyone recommend any tools or techniques? I can't profess to being a dusting expert in my house either :o

I was just contemplating the same thing this morning! I have wooden stables with full height sterling board kick boards, and high eaves (plenty of dust traps). I've got two choices, which are blow or suck!

I could blow all the dust out with my petrol blow vacc thingey, or suck it all up with my new Henry vacuum cleaner.

I think I'll try Henry first, as then I will capture all the dust. If he isn't up to the job, I'll blow all the dust down with the petrol blow vacc and then brush or Henry it up.

The thought of it is making me sneeze already ;).

I empty the stable and then use a hosepipe on mist. I jet wash the floor, leave to dry and then put the bed back down. I do this a couple of times a year.

These are top tips, thank you all. I do like the idea of sucking it all up rather than spreading the dust around so I think I might just see if Lidl has a cheap vacuum cleaner. I'm not sure I want what's in the stables in the Dyson that I then run round our carpets!

I hired an industrial vacuum cleaner from Jewsons to do my stables; it was more powerful than the domestic ones, and had a wider hose so didn't clog up with hay and shavings

Seems I wasn't so stupid at all, I was laughed at for hoovering my stable on my old yard, better than blowing it around I thought

Yep I do this once a year and leave the windows open so there is air going through the stables which seems to decrease the cobwebs and dust.
