Dusty wood pellets bedding - what to do?

My wood pellets bedding has recently become very dusty - and it's not done this before?

I take out all the wet every day and top up each week with one or two bags of new, which I put in dry.

So I could start wetting the new bedding going in, which would help.

But should I now just get rid of the whole stable's bedding and replace with new? How often do you or is this required to keep the bedding fairly dust free?

If I sprinkle the top it dampens down the dust, but of course when it drys out I am back to the same, plus the underneath when they walk on it or turn it over is still dusty.

Or should I add something else to it - another bedding to help?

I have a pony which doesn't pee when in and hers has got dusty so I'm going to hose and turn it around tomorrow- hopefully that will work

dampen the next bag you add with at least half a bucket of water and then mix in, I find if its inclined to get dusty then this is a much better option, in the meantime, spray and mix in.

I water mine every day in dry weather with about a watering can per stable per day after skipping out.
Once a week when I take the wet out I use two cans of dilute Green Gloop and mix it all up well. I find that this works for me and my forester who coughs with the slightest bit of dust!

LOL at the pictures of watering cans! Love it!

Sadly I don't have a watering can - but I do have a hose - so not quite as measured a sprinkling but will do the job for now. In the winter it may be more of a problem as a lot of the time when it freezes I don't have running water at all.

Thank you for your replies and advice. This is quite simple to rectify then? If I just keep doing it daily it will keep the dust down?

How often do you completely clear a wood pellets bed and start afresh? My beds still look quite good and clean, but just dusty.

I'm also going to hoover all the cobwebs and do a bit of a spring clean in the stables this weekend as that's overdue too.

I have to say I only get dust in summer when the bed is hardly in use and the weather is dry.

I never wet my pellets at all, even putting them down first time I don't bother. In winter, when the beds are in use every night and with the damp, Blackpool air - we have no issues at all.

I am asthmatic and dust sets me off. I just cannot use straw - but the 'dust' from the wood pellets doesn't bother me. I guess their's dust....and then their's DUST :)
