A few months ago we bought a new 3.5T Van conversion.....now the DVLA are saying that they won't issue a V5 unless the inspect the modification.....

whats all that about..? The guy said he has sold loads and none have had to have a DVLA inspection...? If it fails the inspection am I within my right to take it back to the dealer that converted it and sold it to me as a horse box...??

What are they looking for, eg size, height, build quality...? Make sure its not a cut and shaft job..? I have no idea and am worried although pleased that they are checking my horses saftey....

Baileys for those in the know.... ;)

Thanks x

Don't know but know somebody who did up a lorry to increase the living space took out the solid bulkhead between the horses and living and put a wood frame in its place with white plastic board over the top so it looks good. After that always weary!!!
But the DVLA shall forever remain a mystery, have you had a look at their website to see if their are any specifications?

This relates to recently introduced European legislation (29 April 2009) that any conversions must now be inspected by VOSA. Clearly the person that converted it has not had it inspected!
The person that sold it to you should have had it tested as an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) prior to trying to sell iton to you.

The DVLA wont do anything other than check the vin number they are only penpushers
its vosa that do the technical inspections all the dvla will be doing is checking the vehicle matches the paper work... im not sure the IVA or SVA applys to used vehicles but some people who modifiy vehicles have to get them tested by vosa however I
dont think it covers anything apart from roadworthyness and emissions ....

I think you will find this has more to do with the fact that the taxation class has changed. DVLA wouldnt know a safe box from a hole in the road!Come to think of it vosa miss a hell of a lot too. I have a box in my workshop that has just passed an MOT. My best estimate is that the body would have fallen completely off within six months!Too few ,too small bolts without even a spring washer let alone a nylock nut. One bolt had already pulled through the mounting ,another was loose, and since when has welding the body to the lighting bracket been an accepted method of mounting the body.:eek::eek:

Jesus H Christ Mike. Honestly I despair. People are so keen to buy these damned things and get one with as high a payload as possible that they just seem to have no concept of safety for their horse, themselves and other roadusers.

sorry to hijack the post, but there seems to be a couple of people who have or do conversions etc

i have a box which i wish to do a chasis swop on, would i have to get this inspection by the DVLA? it should be a straight swop, no changes in structure etc

also could anyone recommend a reliable person company in the east midlands near leicester to help me do this?

There is a section in the registration certificate to notify changes like colour , body type fill that in and send it off to DVLA ,not sure of anyone
who does body swaps in your area I would ask round comercial vehicle repair places..

The new European regulation will apply to all vehicles. So new vehicles and old vehicles will be required to comply.
If a bodybuilder builds a specific vehicle many times then they can get the prototype tested and continue making exactly the sae vehicles without having to have each one tested.
However if they are just one-off's (such as conversions or modifications) then each vehicle will have to be tested prior to being placed on the road.
This will also apply to container switch overs.

Thanks For your help.....

I have an inspection booked in later this week - although the test centre that I have to take it to is no where near me and will take me all day to get there so hope its worth it!!
