Hi, I have recently bought a dutch warmblood 6yr old gelding - his breeding / passport shows the name 'onbekend' as both Dam & Sire... I've tried to research this on the internet but am drawing blanks - can anyone throw any light on this for me? I also need to register him to me but the passport is all in Dutch - I've got a number for the Dutch Warmblood Society in Cornwall but can't get any reply... Any help with this would be great - I'm new to the breed!

Many Thanks

Hi does your horse have KWPN papers? I think that word means 'unknown'. I didn't think the KWPN would issue papers to horses with unknown breeding. What were you told his breeding was?
The easiest thing to do re registering is to send the passport off the British Warmblood Soc (now Warmblood Breeders Studbook) along with proof of purchase and they will overstamp for you. It is expensive and time consuming to go through the official KWPN channels I think.

Unfortunately 'onbekend' means unknown. When the passport legislation came into force, the KWPN like most other studbooks, issued passports to horses that weren't registered with them as foals. Their breeding went down as unknown and unfortunately it looks like yours is one of those.

If you look on defra's website it says "Changes of ownership or change of permanent address of owner must be notified to the organisation that has issued the passport." You need to contact the KWPN to get the passport properly updated. Its a fairly straightforward procedure. More info on their website here or you could give them a ring on 0031 341 255555 - they speak English and are usually very helpful.

Thanks both for your answers - that's really helped! He's fab - history or not and as he's a gelding it's not the end of the world anyway.

Thanks again

Ok - done a bit more digging and realised that he is registered with the NRPS (pony stud) although they do riding horses as well - I'll get in touch with them to sort out change of ownership...
Thanks for your help
