Motorists who drove around the body of a cyclist as he lay dying on a road have been condemned as “inhumane”. Stephen Wills, 55, suffered fatal head injuries after being knocked off his bike in South Manchester by joyriders in a stolen car, which was found burnt out nearby. One motorist may have driven over the dying man, breaking his legs. A police source said: “It’s hard to believe drivers refused to stop and help.”

omg, that's awful. RIP stephen wills.

i'm pretty speechless to be honest.

It knocks me sick to think people would have just passed him by and, beyond all humanity, actually ran over him.

RIP. I can only imagine what is family are going through right now.

thats almost unbelivable, being a cyclist, i see first hand how many drivers dont give a toss, about cyclists or horses walkers or anything come to that often the mums on the school run can be the worst they cut you up knock you down do they stop. no! so long as the can get their little darling on time.
not aimed at anyone just a rant

It's a sad reflection of the society we live in, isn't it. I think there have been cases where people have pretended to be injured and when a driver has stopped to help they have been robbed or had their car stolen. This might explain why people didn't stop, but how on earth do you justify running over someone's legs and not stopping? Despicable behaviour.

Well, I heard that the accident happened during the early hours...I think 3am was mentioned, that the location was very dark (no streetlights) and that police believed that people had been unable to see him as he lay there.

Oh My God... i can hardly believe this is true...
I feel the passing drivers are worse than the joyriders, you almost come to expect it of the joyriders, but not a 'normal' person...
Sickened!!!

I absolutely love the DailyMail:

'Witnesses said that instead of stopping to help Mr Wills as crucial minutes ticked by, other motorists steered around his body, and police believe one actually drove over him.'

Does anyone else see a flaw in this as evidence of uncaring motorists, or is it just me?

Well there's two flaws... anyone else want to know why the 'witnesses' didn't go and help the poor guy??

Yep...if I were a witness, I suspect I'd have been helping the poor guy (after calling the ambulance, obviously) rather than counting cars, and timing minutes til someone helped...
I still reckon that the accident happened in the dark, maybe in bad weather condistions and that a pedestrian happened to come upon him and called for help first. I suspect the Dailymail and other sensationalist papers have no idea how many cars drove by or around him....and the police won't know whether his legs were broken in the original hit-and-run or not....
But it sells newspapers, I suppose.
Condolences to the family.

Rest in peace and my heart goes out to the family !
The only thing that i can say is that there has been so many crimes with people pretending to be hurt and then when a nice person stops they take their car valuables etc etc
No excuse but it might be the case .

This is Manchester we are talking about! Also as S has mentioned if it is dark then it is quiet easy to drive by without noticing, also what sort of speed, if it was a dual road then chances are people just wizzed by. I agree that if anyone drove past understanding the circumstances, ie that there was an injured person, then I agree that is pretty heartless, even for Manchester! Condolences to the family.

I knew Stephen, he should not have died like this. Shame on the people who ignored him, also, shame upon the next door neighbour who had plenty to say at the time, but now allows her son to try to burgle the house of Mr Wills and who has been stealing plants out of the poor man's garden. What happened to respect for the dead?
