Horse had e severe cut to hind leg though to bone Vet bill was £2,080 E &L paid up to the last penny with no quibbles at all ,I just had to remind them once that the Vet wanted payment and they paid 2 days later so I cant complain about them at all .
I have made three claims with E and L and never had any huge problems and each claim was settled within three months. Currently making my fourth which will fringers crossed go as smoothly.
get rid yes i had a problem with them theyr the biggest con around 2 days before a hospital appointment they sent me a letter the letter came saturday the appointment was for the tuesday at 8 in the morning and i couldnt contact them because the monday was a bank holiday and i went ahead with the appointment my horse had a suspected back injury but turned out nothing and cost me around £90 so i came home got on the phone f ed n alsort and run to the bank and canceld DD vets wont deal with them you have to pay up front n claim off them hospitals will cause leahurst were i went said they will pay because were bigger than them but i payed because the excess is £100 so never got as far as a claim but got rid of them fast
I used to be with them and had no problems lost two horses and they paid everything that needed to be paid, I was happy with them. With petplan now as the premiums were to high for my horse so went else where
They paid for Tiggy, but it was a long and hard slog. Tigs was pts the 23 October last year; they paid out, after very strong letter from my vet, March/April for loss of horse. Getting the vets bills paid took some time, but not as long. They could never tell me where they were in the process and I remember being in tears a few times on the phone - admittedly life was throwing things at me and I was not at my best.
Just check what the vets fees level is - two of ours are still insured with them (I need organizing!), but the low premiums are reflected in the cover.
claimed from E and L a few years ago now but it was difficult and they tried to get out of paying. Had to fight and my premiums went up so much after I moved .
I have had most claims settled eventually (think 6-9months later) but never the loss of use on D. It was a complete nightmare to be honest.
Can you afford to cover the vets bill until they pay you back? There is a well known vet hospital that actual has a sign (or did) in their reception along the lines of 'If your horse is here as a emergencies and required a GA or intensive treatment if your insuranch company is EandL please phone them ASAP to make sure you are coverd!
i would check with your vets whether they will actually accept being paid direct by them. My vets won't so you have to pay bill and then E&L pay you which could be a bit of a problem if your horse is having something expensive such as surgery!!
Took me a year, several letters and numerous phone calls, to receive my money. I had my pony pts on the recommendation of the vet who also contacted E&L to tell them why. Bargepole not long enough!
I have not had personal dealings with them but echo checking with your vet first, I use one of the big Newmarket practices and they will not deal with E and L direct as they will do with the likes of NFU and Petplan, I cannot afford to pay up front and wait for the insurance company to pay me back so couldn't take the risk.
They have an appalling reputation and we made the error of being insured with them many years ago.
Basically if you take the risk then just make sure you have read the policy wording and small print and follow everything to the letter if you do make a claim. At the end of the day they are regulated as is every other insurance company and they do have to answer to the FSA and Ombudsman should there be any question over decisions regarding settlements.
Some vets will not take payment direct from them though (as they are so difficult to get money from) so be prepared to have to settle vets bills yourself and then claim the money back.
If you're canny enough and understand insurance then you can save money as they are a lot cheaper than the rest of the more reliable insurance companies.
Also I *think* (heard a whisper) they may have a new claims manager now and they are working at improving their systems and general reputation.
I've been insured with them for 10 years. my first claim (5000+) they paid without a quibble and my only complaint was that I had no communication from them at all - they just started paying the vet - but obviously I was quite happy!
My second and third claims have been a different matter BUT they paid out in the end. My advice is photo-copy EVERYTHING you send twice as they will 'lose' it at least once.
Keep a diary including names of people you speak with. Check that they have recieved anything you send (i fax and then send recorded delivery) and chase them weekly.
I'm still with them - they actually have less exclusions on him then any other company I tried. I expect it to be hard work and a fight now (if they refuse a claim - look carefully, they tried to tell me that a tendon injury was due to mud fever!)but -due to the exclusions and the fact they have paid out is keeping me with them (luckily i have a lovely mum who will pay vet bills and then let me pay her off - the vets laugh when they ask who he'sinsured with)
I don't use them a friend is in the middle of a claim with them at the moment. The claim started in June and so far they have not paid put anything to the vets etc so friend has settled the bills (over £1k so far) herself. He had a day at the vet college this week and she had to settle this herself as well. I had a claim earlier this year with NFU, vet submitted the forms on a Monday and received a cheque by the friday!
after months and months of their refusal to pay out, letters from me, my vet etc i saw that someone had complained to a scottish newspaper about them. I advised them that i would do the same and they then paid out £250 minus excess towards the £1000 bill. I cant move as my horse is 22 and doubt anyone else would take him on but i would rather pay a higher premium and have piece of mind with a reliable company if i had the choice.
