Am looking into geting Rider only insurance from E & L, But having reviewed them on the internet, they really dont have a good reputation. Have any of you had any dealings with them/can you recomend any insurers?

Thanks

Nick.

I have used e and l and they have paid out everytime but they are longwinded . I use insuremyhorse for my new mare and they have been very helpful.

do not touch with a barge pole. They are a nightmare and won't pay out without a fight. try NFU, South Essex, KBIS in fact anyone really except E&L, equine and Livestock and equine and leisure.

Dont know nothing about rider only insurance so cant really comment on E & L for that but I wouldnt insure with them. NFU are excellent.

For rider only insurance i would recomend BHS gold membership, i wouldnt touch E and L with a barge pole as although i have known people get money back after a claim i havent known anyone that hasnt had to fight them to get there money.

Dont go there!!!!!! Their scum of the insurance world! biggest bunch of to**ers going. Nearly took them to court when they refused to pay on a claim stating that i lied to them about my horse, no told them everything, they just didnt bloody listen and had proof to show that i told them to, barstools they still make me angry now....

I've had rider only insurance from them aswell as horse insurance from them and I would say exactly the same as everyone else, don't go there! There are plenty of other insurers out there for you to be able to stear clear of e&l.

claimed from E and L for my old TB having cancer. They tried to avoid paying because on my claim form I said he'd had wolf teeth removed and vet just put no previous conditions and they said the two didn't match. The tumour was on his side not in his mouth. They did pay after a fight but the amount I got back was only what I'd paid in premiums and I still had to pay quite a lot myself (hospitalisation wasn't covered) . They then excluded cancer from his insurance. Although he was covered LOU but wasn't going to die that year and could be ridden still (although I wanted to compete) I couldn't claim. They then put premiums up a lot so I decided from then to not insure but save £50 a month for vets fees.

Despite my mare poking herself in the eye and having 2 ops on it I am still up by almost £2000.

Thanks guys

Thanks.

Don't go there!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take forever to answer you as always seem to be experiencing high claims volumes. You hardly get to speak to anyone.

I needed to send a very strongly worded complaint and threatened to report them to the FSA (Financial Services Authority).

Eventually got my claim paid with compensation but took a long time.

They can't even get the information right on the quotes so god help them (and more so you) if you need to claim.

You quote will come back with a your name spelt wrong, you'll of had a sex change and you'll be 10 years older!

You would need to go for the gold membership as the silver doesnt include any liabilty cover, as an adult it costs £55 a year ( so not a bad price ) Edited to add if you are under 21 it is only £42

I was with them years but never need to claim, then was told by both friends & vets that they were not a good company for paying out. A work colleague then had real problems over a claim for vet's fees for a dog so I cancelled all my policies. I'm now with South Essex who have been great over a claim & paid 100% of the cost of an MRI scan.

Another one saying don't go near E&L - they did pay up eventually after my horse was pts with colic but it took a real fight!
I have BHS gold membership and I think it's worth it for the insurance benefits (although I've never had to claim - touch wood!).

Funnily enough I called E & L today (with them at the moment but will be changing at renewal!). I got a letter telling me my premium was going up by about £12 a month! I thought it was my renewal time but when I called they had just taken it upon themselves to enter me into some discount/voucher scheme that I didn't want, you have to contact them not to be part of it. This is the 2nd time they have tried this!!

Not impressed with this tactic to get more money out of clients, they are just hoping people don't query or notice the increase!

They paid out recently on my mare that I had to have PTS in October. We had some discussions along the way, and my vet wrote a pretty strongly worded letter at one point.

Let's just say my new horse is insured elsewhere (NFU - who paid out within five days of receiving all the correct documentation).

Very expensive, premiums seem to go up in inverse proportion to cover. They will think of any reason they can to not pay out. BHS Gold membership seems much better IMO,(although I've never tried to claim from them).

Wouldn't pee on them if they were on fire!!!

My older mare was insured with them when i got her so carried it on,realised now that was a bad move!

She went unlevel out of the blue whilst i was holiday, after nerve blocks, bone scans etc nothing was found, they think she did her hip in as there was a lot of heat around that area on one of her scans, she had cartrophen injs,is now basically on joint supplements and we guess she has early Osteoarthritus and she turned 8 in may!!!!!

Anyway, when i rang them to tell them she was lame they seemed fine, said they'd send out a claim form and to fill it in etc.

Vet filled it in and sent if off, excess was £500 and i had a lot of stabling fees from the vets to pay as they won't pay out for that so all together i had £1000 of my own money to pay with other bits added in. I pestered them for ages!!!!! It took nearly a year for them to pay the vets fees!!!! The sum was a lot too, most vets won't go near them.

I work at a vets (didn't back then!) and we try to advise clients to go with NFU or Petplan and def try to explain reasons NOT to go with that dreaded company.

The thing that makes me reel is that they get to have all these full page adverts in all the top horse magazines, why o why do they get to do that,it just lures new inexperienced horse owners and the poor people havn't a clue!

Dont, they took 6 months to pay for my horse's tendon surgery. They agreed to pay it, then they changed their minds and after a tearful phone conversation with them, they agreed to again.

My vet quibbled with them on my behalf as they refused to pay for certain things which the policy said they would pay for as well.

There are other insurance companies out there.

By all the previous comments you probably aren't going to go with these guys but I just had to say my "NO DON'T DO IT" too!!
I went with them for Whisper - got a very cheap price quoted and was happy. I sent off my 5 * vetting certificate to them as requested, they then two weeks later sent me a letter to say they hadn't received it. i was clever and I had sent it signed for -called to say oi you've got it! They admitted they had lost it.... a month later it's returned to me! I call, they say all fine, i say where's my policy documents... 3 MONTHS after initially agreeing to quote they suddenly take 4 months payments all in one go (still no sign of policy documents), a week later they take ANOTHER month's payment. I call (practically crying at this point - I am not made of money & having £300 odd quid taken out of my account in one go caused me and my mortgage company MAJOR problems!) and they apologise but it takes a further month to get sorted/refunded.
I by this point give up and decide to move back to Pet Plan (very expensive but paid out for all Tory's arthritis treatment without question) and loose my full cover/loss of use etc as my vet cert is now out of date but oh well - he's insured &i'm not with stupid E&L anymore so i'm happy!!!
