I did a search but nothing came up.

I am due to renew in early March and was looking around. I am currently with KBIS who I know have very good reviews and recommendations. The problem is, because my pony is low value they will only cover him for £3000 vet fees per incident. I know this doesn't go very far if a trip to horspital is ever involved for example, so ideally id prefer a higher level of vet cover.

E&L popped up as doing £5750 per claim and the cost was a little bit cheaper (£3 per month) I'm not fussed about the premium to be honest, just want the peace of mind of a higher lever of vet cover.

Are they any good? Don't want to move somewhere for higher cover if they dont pay out!

Thanks

I wouldn't even bother picking up the phone tbh.. they are notorious for not paying out. Try Petplan or NFU... Unless you're planning to jump him at home, i'd not have that on your insurance as it bumps up the costs.

I had one insured with them once as well as my tack. It took 8 months to get paid out when tack room got broken into & we had a major barney when they refused to pay out for vet bills for my old pony due to an old unrelated injury that didn't need vet treatment & they were told about (& had said it wouldn't affect her cover at all). I told them where to shove their insurance, swiftly cancelled it & never went with them again. Also the vet told me they are the worst company to deal with xx

NFU, Petplan, Scottish, SEIB etc

All well known names and good reputations.

You can set the vet fees to what ever you want! It doesn't go on the value of the horse it goes on the age of horse!

I have a 21 yr old comp horse and he is only on a veteran policy and therefore 3000 vets fees only but he is worth 25k easily but my little other horse aged 14 who is only valued at 500 has 5000 vets fees.

Doesn't make sense but its on age! Needless to say the 14 year old has so many exclusions now! He has certainly earned his name sicknote!!!!!

No it wasn't a joke! But I will steer well clear! Plus i've just been reading the small print and the excess on vet fees is 17.5%!!!! Its only about £135 for £3000 worth with KBIS.

Think ill stick with what I know!

Thanks

Erm nooo! My friend is still waiting for her vets fees to be paid and it will be a year in May... my vets also dont class you insured if you are with them.

Im with Petplan, my older horse is insured for £1000 (he is worth less but this was the min I could insure for without having to seek written permission which I couldnt be bothered with). I am insured for £5000 of vets bills £135 excess.

I insured with them once, many years ago. The horse (a 4yr old TBXcob mare) spooked and spun out hacking (in company), lost her rider, and took off for home - she was hit by a car on the way, and sustained massive chest injuries, requiring over 100 stitches. The car was a complete write-off as well.

They refused to pay out, saying that it was my fault, because I hadn't taken adequate precautions to prevent the accident! When I queried it, someone there suggested that I shouldn't have taken her out on the roads because she was young! They went on to say that she was obviously unsafe to ride as she had spooked.

I was left with a £2000 vets bill, and the insurance co of the car that hit her threatened to take me to court as well. I had to get a solicitor involved to sort that out, and lived on the breadline for a few months so that I could pay the solicitor and the vets bill - it left a very nasty taste in my mouth where E&L are concerned

Another to vote a big NO to E&L.
When i was about 15-16, my mum sorted out the insurance for my mare with E&L and when she died after slipping on a patch of ice when being brought in, they were truly awful. now I work in insurance and know they need thorough info, but the way they treated us and the amount of time it took them to pay out was ridiculous. Needless to say, we switched to petplan after that happened and they have been truly brilliant (especially in comparison) yes they are a little more expensive, but when i've had to claim it has been so easy, and they have sorted payment out direct with the vets.

I am with KBIS and only have my boy insured for £1k but I have the full £5000 of vets fees. I have just got to the end of a claim for George's COPD which came to £4k in the end  and I cannot fault KBIS at all, they paid the bills by return of post, didn't make me fill in loads of forms and when I had a couple of queries they were really helpful over the phone. Really pleased with them.

I insured with them before on x3 different horses and they paid out every claim, only bad point I think is they can be slow to pay out and I had to chase numerous times and felt like I was being fobbed off but they paid all money due.

However my new vet said he won't deal with them so I had to go with Petplan.

I used to insure with Shearwater, who do up to £10k vets fees cover but not sure what the conditions are as I only had £3K, might be worth giving them a ring? They were brilliant when dealing with my claim and paid out on everything the vet recommended without question. And no, I don't work for them! :D

Nope - Comes to something when a vet asks who are you insured with before doing any work, luckily I was with NFU it was for my dog at the time

Do not touch with some one elses barge pole .......... seriously bad. Our vets are the same, they don`t class you as being insured at all if you`re insured with them.

I`m with KBIS, and after nearly loosing my lad last year with a ruptured windpipe they were fantastic, cannot fault them.

My friend's pony had a tumour on his withers, which was found when he went lame for no apparent reason. Scans showed up the tumour, which was huge.

Friend, a highly qualified orthopaedic nurse, discussed the prognosis with the vet, who's opinion was that the treatment would be long, painful and not even guaranteed to work, so they agreed to PTS.

However, when the vet spoke to them, E&L disagreed, saying the pony needed to come home and try the treatment for a month. Both friend and vet tried to argue them out of it to no avail.

Result? Pony was PTS and she received not one penny. Oh yes, and they also disclosed some confidential information about my friend to a third party in direct contravention of the Data Protection Act, but she was too upset about her pony to follow it up.

Another friend's horse literally dropped dead underneath her and they refused to pay out for some specious reason until the small claims court ordered them to.

Not one vet that I know of round here will give you credit if you're with E&L.

ive had full payout to the max £5k with Stoneways for one pony, no problems at all. Also with a loan horse who was insured with NFU had 2 claims in the same month for the same leg (but 2 different issues) bill came to over £7k!! at 1st they treated it as 1 condition (NFU) and paid the £5k, then after a letter from our vet (big help!) they paid most of the rest (treating it as 2 conditions), leaving me with what I expected to have paid. it was good to have £5k per condition, where as with Stoneways (who I'm still with for mine) its £5k in total.
I'll be looking around next month to see if theres one that will do £5k per condition but cheeper than NFU who's prices have gone up quite a lot
