My loan horse is insured by his owner and I did not even know who he was insured with..........until today. Now I knew E&L had a bad reputation BUT......

Chiro is 99% sure horse has kissing spines and needs x ray. No problem, he is insured.

Except that I now find out that ALL the vets in our area require full payment in advance of any procedure if you are insured by E&L as they are so unreliable.

Owner rings her vet in Leeds, sure enough same thing.

So please take this as a word of warning, if anyone should need one, DO NOT USE E&L.

I am understandably annoyed as we now face having to pay upfront for kissing spine surgery if that is what is required.

Been there, got the T-shirt......

.....changed insurers as soon as they had paid up....which they did, eventually....but as you say I was out of pocket a grand.......

How awful - I feel for you. I too had a bad experience with E&L & will NEVER use them again - not worth the extra couple of pounds you save per month. Hope everything works out for you

Where does the 'we' come in to it?

I feel for you. They messed me about, and we only had insurance with them for a month!

Cheap insurance just isn't worth it.

E&L are really really bad news. A friend had to have her horse pts in the early hours of the morning as he was suffering so much with colic. Her vet made my friend ring and leave a message on E&L's answering service to tell them what was happening at 3am. When she rang them the next day they said the horse should not have been pts as they had not been informed. She told them she had left a message on answering service. After a big battle they paid up but she wouldn't have thought to do that if it hadn't been for her vet!

That's what I was wondering.

I'd be sending the Horse back.

IMO if you loan a horse then you are responsible for vets fees, unless agreed beforehand that you split them or the owner pays. Full loan means you are responsible for the horse- everything from buying a saddle to vets fees. Why should the owner pay? If they offer, great but i find it really annoying when people with horses on loan EXPECT the owner to pay for things.

If you buy a horse you wouldnt expect the last owner to pay for the ves fees, provide tack or give you hay. Whats different if you loan it? (short term loans/sharing are a different matter)

It depends what is in your loan agreement. I have a 20 yr old mare on loan and I wrote the agreement. I am responsible for all vet bills.

To all those who made reference to "we".

It is a difficult situation. The agreement was that I would take the horse on permanent loan and therefore be responsible for all vets bills. I have had the horse since June 09. Clearly I do not feel that I should pay in full for a "pre existing" condition, but similarly I do not feel it should be the owners sole responsibilty. If successful treatment is an option then I would expect to keep the horse on.

To all those who suggested I send him back, I happen to be very attached to him and do not view him as merely a machine to be sent back as he is broken!

E&L,wouldnt touch with a bargepole, what confuses me is how they can possibly still be trading in equine insurance when they have such bad press

just on here alone the amount of people that know not to touch them with a bargepole is unbelievable...surely something can be done to sort these muppets out?

(i was insured many yrs ago with them, and although it was someone else that had to claim from them for something my horse did i really felt for them,i doubt to this day they got a penny out of them for their cars

Only had 1 claim and although a little slow they did pay up,Last week decided to have a browse around for cheaper/better cover and just out of interest i put details in E&L site and it came out £20 a month cheaper sp i rang them to question this. They said it was internet offer but would knock £10 per month off premium and re-emburse for something i never asked for that had been added on,Less than 7 days later cheque arrived for £40. Maybe they pulling their socks up if so many people leaving but i doubt it
