I am about to invest in insurance for a veteran horse, does anyone have any comments/views on E&L or NFU - in particular with regards an old horse. As she is a 'veteran' I cannot get insurance for illness or disease.

TIA

DO NOT USE E&L!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not touch them with a barge pole or two put together! i'm talking from personal experience.

My 24yr old is insured with pet plan but has been since he was about 18yrs.
I've heard good things about NFU too but not had a policy with them.

One cover is not worth the paper it's written on and the other is fine!

Depending on hwo old the horse iss now you can get illness cover with Petplan up to higher age limits.

personally petplan offer a better cover for veteran horses. they might be more expensive but they cover more that nfu. don't use e and l they are con artist.

Ditto - I would avoid the first company like the plague - huge history of complaints from customers on here and also bad reports about them in some horsey magazines.

A friend was once pursueing a claim with E&L and submitted x-rays. E&L lost the x-rays and he had to get another set and they didn't give him the cost back even though it was their fault!! Would not touch them with a Barge Pole!! Like said before Petplan very good for veterans. Been with them nearly 20 years and they have been very good.

E&L were totally and utterly useless when I needed to rush Merls to hopsital back in 2004 and they had to be notified before I took him - it was mothering sunday...like they'd answer the phone, they never did pay up on a claim as apparently I hadnt asked for veteran insurance, but I did as he was older then too....

NFU i have nothing but good comments about then same applies to Petplan....

Just please avoid E&L....bad bad bad bad bad people...urgh

Thank you all, I just phoned OH to tell him to try Pet Plan - guess what he said 'I've just been talking to Pet Plan'.

He ran through everything with me, they sound great, they will take her on with full cover, we could go to veteran if we want (not really thanks...).

So, as always - you guys know what you're talking about - thank you

Well the fact I've heard some vets consider those with E&L as "uninsured" the word bargepole comes to mind. I'm always suspicious of companys who need to advertise that much... I mean every horsey mag, every edition is a bit much....

NFU,Petplan anything other than E & L.
My vets will wait for payment from Petplan/NFU but if your with E & L they expect you to cough up if E & L delay payment.

Do yourself a favour, forget about E&L, erase them from your mind and give NFU a call. Based on previous experience, testimonials from hundreds of people, Watchdog on TV and my own personal experience they are seriously not worth it.

I've always used NFU and they've been brill - didn't quibble at all when the pony I had needed to have emergency surgery on a weekend and I couldn't let them know til the Monday.

have heard bad reports about E&L so would always stick with NFU.

Some vets make you pay up in advance for treatments if you are insured with E&L. Their reputation preceeds them. My horse had a costly op in September and on the admittance forms, was a paragraph about E&L and it stated that if your horse was insured with E&L payment would be required up front, before they allowed the horse to leave the premises! It actually said that those insured with E&L will be deemed as uninsured!!! This is a well-known clinic.

I am with Scottish Equestrian who have recently been taken over by Petplan. Never had a problem with them. I had a scary moment where I thought they weren't going to pay out for the op because of a misunderstanding and paperwork error by the clinic, but as soon as I wrote to them and included a note from my farrier, they paid up! Horse went lame 18th August, sent claim off mid-October; received letter asking for further info a week later (due to clinic's error), replied to said letter about 10 days ago once my farrier had supplied his bits, and received pay out yesterday. So 6 weeks from claim to payout even with all the faffle. Not bad, even by my standards! We moved to SEIS after being with South Essex for several years and having problems. SEIS also paid out within 10 days for our claim on our mare who had laminitis and was subsequently PTS.

Just shows that price comparison sites are not good . . . do any comparison site for pet/horse insurance & E///```L are the top of the list.
do
not
bargepole
Average claim settlement time from receipt of claim form is 9 months! (even if the do pay out)

I had E and L for my mare in 1990. The yard got broken into and my bridle and other stuff stolen. I only earned £27 a week then so relied on the Insurance to buy new stuff. They messed about conitnually asking for new information. It took over 3 months for a simple theft claim. I would never go near them again.

I have been with Petplan for my 1 horse for about 10 yrs. I have had to make some fairly large vet claims (my insurance is up to 5K for vet issues). I have never had any problem with them providing the refund/claim. Of course, pre-existing illnesses are disregarded, as with all policies.
Customer service always excellent. Not sure how they are with veterans, and I expect you can get cheaper, but I will be sticking with Petplan.

I think it's clear that Petplan, in whatever their guise (my insurer is owned by Petplan), is the way to go. I hope you've seen the light, OP! Insure with E&L at your peril.

9 months from claim to payout is just outrageous! 9 weeks is pushing it, but 9 MONTHS!?!!

Petplan are great with veterans. Saying that, Scottish Equestrian were not part of Petplan when I started insuring with them, and they would insure for illness/vets until 25 if insured before age 20! Pretty great I think seeing as most stop insuring for that at 20.
