I have just recently bought my mare and pony home from livery and have noticed they are rubbing their ears against the stable door or me (if i let them). I gave my mares ear a quick rub inside tonight and found blood on my fingers. At first, she seemed to like me doing it but then pulled back sharply.

Do you think they have mites or just scabby areas resulting from the flies? I cant really see inside that well as a bit hairy. How can I tell what it is and what should I do to relieve the pain/irritation for them? Suggestions please....

xx

My mare does this too. I've had a look inside and it seems to be the little black flies biting. They also bite underneath her and around her teats..poor thing. I've noticed that putting a little Vaseline helps as the flies can't stay on it and bite :) xx

I'm always on about this stuff, but it's fabulous  :D
The name is Ruggles Stop It All...
My cob has these in his ears, they're little black flies biting them, I also find them on his swirls here there and everywhere, also by his sheath. Apparently these are mites which start in these 'top' areas, then go and breed in their legs ect. This stuff is really good and the flies hate it and never go near my lad when he has the oil on, I just dab it where they gather (ears, sheath, swirls ect...) and they're gone :) really reccomend you get some :D
