Working out the average due date gives us a window to work around, most foals on HHO this year have been later than this date.

What is the earliest any of your mares have foaled? I am pretty sure my mare is going to foal significantly earlier than the average due date, so would be interested in your responses.

Not me, but a guy down the road had one drop in December! He bought the horse not knowing it was in foal so had a bit of a surprise!

Gosh that is a bizarre time to foal - no wonder he was surprised.

Tobago's first 2008 baby is due on 18 January. And at this rate, with last-minute late-season bookings and uncooperative late-foaling mares, his last 2008 baby will probably be born sometime in August....

Anything earlier than 320 days is considered premature, although pony mares can foal early without complications. My foals were all earlier than 340 days this year, but where all born later on in the year which does seem to make a difference (26th May onwards)

My QH mare's average due date is not till 9th September, however I believe she will foal earlier as all signs are showing this is likely to happen in the next couple of weeks. Just wondered if anyone had had a foal arrive as early as this.

My mare foaled 2 weeks early in may and showed no signs at all, no waxing. slackening, anything. I think she was surprised herself when baby appeared! I know that it's not that premature but the year before she foaled 2 weeks early aswell and lost the foal, it was a difficult birth and there were a number of complications, the foal being early was one of them. Anyway good luck with your mare, I hope all goes well.

Thank you Calzy. This pregnancy is one which I, and the mare, will be glad to see the behind us, to be honest.

I'm really not sure. Golden is the boss in that field so she won't have anyone causing any trouble......however if there were to be any problems then it would probably be better to not have the others all nosing around. I may change my mind, but I think what I am going to do is to put her, Cloud and Legacy in the small paddock next to their field for overnights and then turn them all back out in their field during the day. I can't leave her in a paddock alone because of the flies......she needs tails!

My main reason for separating Cloud was because I knew that Golden wanted to steal the baby.

What are you thinking? Trying to figure out what you are going to do in the Spring?

My last foal arrived 2 weeks early in the field one morning, she was a real suprise as mum wasnt showing classic signs, hence the filly being called...Dawn Suprise lol

I had one of those too!!! I hope everything went OK, apart from the unplanned appearance.

Mine was lucky not to be coyote bait, she rolled under a fence and went walkabouts in the woods.

Thanks SFS. This mare has dropped and loosened and she is already bagged up and has crystals on her teats hence why I am wondering. I expect she will do the same as your mare to be honest - although if it is through the night I will likely see her foal, it's just through the day I don't tend to sit watching every hour.

Our little foal who was born in April has been sniffing at Golden's vulva today so not sure if this is a sign or if she can just smell the milk in her bag. For the moment I have left the mare with her herd as it still seems too early.

I say she will foal in 10 days........ and then we'll all be happy.

Oh Tia I can't wait to see this foal! Fingers crossed for you and Golden.

Well you know my mares were late, but you also know Teazle looked like she was definitely going to be early, I was positive. She also dropped, slackened, bagged up and had crystals.......that was a month before

And then she goes 5 days over! lol. But like you know, you can never tell with these mares

Think your plan of putting her, Cloud and Legacy in the paddock at night will be perfect.
