They arent cheap! Im assuming that you can re-use them, as in, put them on for a competition, take them off and store them until the next. My other question is glue... well the glue must be pretty strong to keep the suckers on, so what would you use to get them off?

Numpty questions I know!

that shouldnt be too much of a problem, I spend 20 pounds a year on trimming currently ( he gets checked every six months!) so I have plenty left in my hoof budget. I would also be very open to boots, but many people seem to find them a bit clunky to jump in, so any recommendations for boots that are good to jump in and provide grip, would be great!

I'm not sure they are any more secure than gloves with tape/power straps

They mostly seem to be used for endurance where the risk of rubbing from a gaiter is higher.

ester, I was wondering what specifically they use for endurance as they must go miles, need grip and the least cumbersome boots/gloves possible, when you say gloves... any chance you could pop me a link of which you are referring to? :D

I don't think you would be able to re-use. You hit the nail on the head ;) when you said you need a strong glue to keep them on, therefore to get them off (u-tube vids) takes some serious prizing off, with a bit of rasping.

In which case I wont be using them, not only is it quite a hefty fee for a one off, but to me that would potentially be as damaging as nailing on a set of shoes every time you compete :(

We use them like shoes during the season, 3.5 weeks on, half a week off. They are expensive, but they work out the same as metal shoes with posh pads. Our farrier fits them. Horses for courses though, they are best if you have a lot of dry tracks and they do give good protection at the height of summer, but can be slippy if it is wet.

hmmm, thanks for that ester, I think those are definately the way to go, I will practice on the xc field and see how we go, then look at getting them, that way I will have them and can pick and choose when I use them or not, without affecting any damage to my horse.

Queenbee I had thought the same, but no, one use only when glued and have to be nailed other wise. My trimmer did mutter about playing around with the gloves, putting tape on the hooves and then gluing the boot to the tape, so as not to damage the hoof when removing the boot. The discussion came about because my boy is getting on a bit, and was really feeling the harder ground this summer just passed. However, it all came to nought, because the rules for dressage say no boots. Full stop, end story and that includes pads which come up over the heels, so I didn't bother taking it any further.

However, when I was riding endurance, we just went barefoot. He did around 2,500 km including FEI3* with no problem. I discounted using boots for endurance because I was worried about rubbing - mind you back then there was only the ezi boot original.

sorry been a busy day..

well he is a welsh cob and was trying to keep up with an exracer the other day ... they didn't move at all! I do use power straps with mine as they fit him a little better like that. TBH until recently I had only walked and trotted with them when we were transitioning but I have brought them back into use for group rides round the stoney tracks in the woods and have taken them quite fast and up some random slippy chalk banks and been pleasantly surprised! Someone on here (with a haffy) hunts in hers without issue.
