Eating bedding?

Hi all

I'm a big fan of Bliss (and to a lesser degree Easibed), I've always found it easy to manage and relatively cheap. I've always had issues with my horses eating a straw bed so have stopped using straw now.

HOWEVER, one of the grooms at my yard nearly lost his horse after a colic, supposedly due to it eating Aubiose. He's now paranoid (understandably) about bedding like Bliss/Easibed/Aubiose etc and won't have it on the yard.

I've never heard of this happening before, has anyone here had problems or is it most likely an unfortunate coincidence?

Regards

Not heard of horses eating that before. Could it be that the horse concerned didnt have enough hay and so took to grazing the bedding? A horse on our yard ate her straw bed and did die of colic just over a year ago. It was awful to see her in so much pain so I do know how your friend must feel.

Can't help I'm afraid but have always been suspicious of any bedding with any chopped straw in, as I have a VERY greedy and accident prone horse who would definitely be tempted. I have gone over to EVA matting with a sprinkle of shavings- no more worry, no dust and very quick to muck out.
