so being a newish dog owner i knew NOTHING about feeding dogs.
what do dogs eat? that stuff in tesco, buy a bag (Bakers ;) ) so i did.

since reading all these threads about feeding raw on here it has interested me and how bad it must be to feed a carnivore cereal based food and considering if the RAW diet was an option in my busy life

SO yesterday on a walk, mutt came across a fresh bunny carcas minus head and she sniffs it and lays down with it between her paws on the stubble and starts munching away.

only a few weeks ago id have been;

' Ewwww! Darcy come AWAY, leave that durrtty thing, you'll catch something..'

*pulls disgusted faces and waves arms in a panicky windmilly manner*

it was rather gross watching the innards fall out but i watched her eat it quite fascinated to see she ate everything, the tail.. fur, little legs the LOT.

It made me think.. it seemed natural some , maybe i should be making more of an effort to read raw BUT can anyone put my mind at rest, are rabbit carcasses safe to eat in the wild or should i make her avoid them in future?

Well I suppose the only thing you need to know is how it died aka was it poisioned??

Mine eat all kinds of decaying things out on walks and they are fine healthy woofers.

They are sick of a the sight of rabbits in the winter though as the have them almost every morning.

cripes, poisoning>? thats a point toffee.
it was minus its head and had definitley had been munched on by something very recently as the neck bone was lying close by. In fact i think a fox might have just lost his lunch but that is a good point.

do they poison rabbits on arable land does anyone know>

When I had my Lancashire Heelers they were always killing rabbits and eating them. One year between May & Spetember they killed over 30, they cant outrun a rabbit but can move through a hedge as quick as.

My daughters bf often shoots rabbits here on the farm and the Dobes get to eat them but the bf skins them first. I think this has got to be one of the most natural feed you can give your dog and my dog love it.

Does anyone poison rabbits? I think your dog is safe Lula, the only worry I would have is if the land around is arable and newly planted using seed treated to repel rodents.

Probably, hopefully killed by a fox. Myxi bunnies are ok as that is species specific. Make sure her wormer is up to date as bunnies are notoriously full of worms.

If you want to go raw, work out how much you'd need to feed her (2.5% of body weight) and see if you can source it.

Google, see how useful you think any would be. Look at the raw sticky and this link: http://www.petforums.co.uk/dog-health-nutrition/111437-raw-feeding-everything-you-need-know.html

Huge, but worth it.

Erm, did you switch from Bakers?

thanks for that cinnamon. yes i have changed from bakers to a good quality wet dog food for the moment. its got to be better than cereal based products right?

thats interesting what you say about catching rabbits dobes. my darcy never seems to get them no matter how hard she tries.

Depends on how fresh it looked, OH often collects pheasants from the road side for our dogs and cats (I dont feed totally RAW) but will give it little and often bar one dog that gets RAW all the time.
Mine often catch rabbit so get to eat and if one looks fresh then OH will bring it back and skin it.

does anyone know how i can attach pix to my posts? Ive clicked the little envelope icon above the text box but it says 'insert URL of image' when i do and the picture is on my hard drive not on a URL!?

am i missing something? !

sorry for stupido here.

What Cala says. Photo bucket is free, create an account, upload from your computer, copy and paste the IMG code from Photobucket onto your post. Photo embeds so is there when people look at your post, no need for them to click links etc.

ah got it thanks girls. i dont have a photobucket account but i can make one. strange that it wont let you attach straight from hard drive tho.

had a pic of dog with her head down a bunny hole!

As others, I will only let them chow down on something when I am reasonably sure how it died (like the one I ran over and chucked in my car last weekend, oopsies :o) just to be on the safe side.

People have been known to lay baited bunnies out for bigger predators :(
