What can I do to stop my young boy eating our fencing? Could he have a deficiency in something??? I've tried Cribox - but he finds another place to chew and we have too much fencing to coat it all - we've moved fields today and nows he's started on that fencing - can anyone help/advise?

Thanks

Sue

Some horses just enjoy eating wood, they may not necessarily be wood chewers! We have tried most things, but the only thing which will keep them off it is electric fencing

it could be a mineral deficiency , you could try GlobalVite other than that .. theres not alot to do to be honest, damage limitation is the only way but at cost , copper sheetingg nailed on to the top but man this could cost sh..it loads or electric fence ... hed probably find a tree though and eat that te he
good luck

Can be because of a deficiency in his diet...not enough fibre or lacking certain minerals...or can be stress, boredom or simply because he likes doing it!!

Electric tape is the fastest and most effective method to prevent him doing it!

I had to electric tape my wooden fences as donkeys always eat wood. In the long term you may want to get some plastic coated netting and wrap it around the fences. Expensive but much neater and in the long run cheaper than replacing the wood.

Years ago i believe people used to coat the field fences using dirty engine oil (Im talking donkeys years ago) remarkably some of which are still in place at our farm. I think this is an old fashioned remedy for fence chewing and im sure its probably banned now but we had a woodpecker on livery who always left those rails well alone and just chewed the newer ones which wernt treated.
NB: Im not advising this as a solution, before i get a right bo**ocking just telling you what naughty old grumpy farmer used to do.
But maybe there will be a fence treatment apart from cribbox which isnt toxic?
