My 8 month old cocker is eating her own or other dogs poo.

She is fed Burns and raw meat was wormed with drontal flavour last week and is reg wormed, frontlined and in great health. I also feed garlic oil, flaxseed oil and brewers yeast. Been seen by vet and been reassured she is in great condition not fat but certainly not skinny - just right.

I have to attend every trip to the garden and be ready to pounce when anyone does anything and get there before her :( It is awful as my dogs are house dogs and the kids play with them and cuddle them but I am worried about them getting licked by her and catching something nasty. I am scrupulous aboth them washing hands but am also worried sick.

Advice greatly appreciated !

ps I tried feeding pineapple last week but she seemed to be even keener on that second time around!!

There is a theory that in the wild dogs eat the whole animal, including the half digested stomach contents, and there is something in semi-digested food they need.

I had a very ill dog once who went off its food, including all the most tempting tit bits I could think of, the last thing it would eat was horse poo before it died of cancer. On research I gather this isn't uncommon, no one knows exactly what the dog is searching for.

I now let me dogs eat horse poo, like you, I am not sure that I would like to see it eating dog poo, but it may be worth checking out the horse poo theory in case your dog is missing vital element and just trying to rectify it itself?

Mine did this for ages. I stalked them, picked it up, they eventually stopped. I was dominant in that I stopped them getting to the poo and it was 'mine', they weren't allowed it. It worked.

They do help me muck out most mornings!! But she even eats that second time around via the other dogs insides :(

Think I may investigate dog Pro biotics and green tripe .

Unfortunately she is a very greedy spaniel and will eat horse poo until she is sick with utter over indulgence :( she also eats the newspaper, cauliflower leaves, steals raw onions out of larder a real gannet!

I also worry because although I have wormed her if she is eating poo she could well reinfect herself. I pick up all I find but in a 2 acre field I cannot always get to her quick enough to scoop the poop!!!

Cinnamon toast how long did it take? I do tell her to "leave it" and she is starting to listen - I am just looking for a chink of light ;)

I have a long line we used to get recall - will dig it out - Thank you :D

Still would like to understand why in order to help her if necessary.

Ok so I have 12 dogs. Some eat poo, some don't. They all get fed the same. Some are just so greedy / disgusting they will simply eat anything.................. I've seen many a poo not even hit the ground. They get fish4dogs and raw meat. Once a week they get just bones, same dogs even eat the 'bone poo'.

Just don't leave a human (husband) poo in the toilet in the house and question why your dog's breath smells of poo and has a brown face..........................

LOL

Seen it all. The joy of dogs. I'm quite sure none of this was ever worried about when I was a child. If I ever have children I won't worry. I do worm the dogs twice a year and I reckon that's sufficient.

Took them til about 13 months to stop.

Please keep onions out of reach, they're dangerous and can oxidise dog red blood cells.

If she's hungry, have you looked at how much you're feeding and the quality? Quality food might keep her full longer. Plus keep her occupied so she's not looking for trouble.

.

One of our dogs ate one of my husbands poos once.....! We were camping so not technically a toilet situation but grim all the same! One of our bitches does chomp down on the occasional turd, I don't know why. I've come to the conclusion that she is just a bit of a minger and enjoys it. Despite being fed good food, definitely not hungry etc! I think continue what you're doing, catching her in the act and teaching no/leave it is your best bet and hopefully she will grow out of it!

You can buy stool repel tablets from pet shop. They work with some dogs.
They have red peppers etc in which is supposed to make te poo taste horrible to the dog. It might be worth a try.

Thank you for all advice. It's a relief to know I am not alone in having to endure such grossness from my pup.

I shall keep her out the larder at all costs - she wasn't allowed to eat onion but she tried to gobble it up before I could catch her.

I have tried increasing meal sizes but to be honest it seems to make things worse as she has too much going through her system and doen't digest it properly.

I am off to google stool repellents as if not too expensive worth a try.
