Every morning my rising 4 year old on his way to his field stops to eat the roots of churned up clover and clods of soil from the track down to his field. Doesn't have clover in his field but he does had mud at the gateway but never tries to eat it here- just on the track where patches of clover grow- he doesn't eat the tops just roots revealed by the horses as they turn it up on the way to the field. He has a good supplement and salt lick as well as scoop of fast fibre and happy hoof.

Yes, nothing to worry about, I would add salt to diet as they dont all like a lick. When you say a good supplement, do you mean he is getting a proprietry mineral supplement, I would let him eat it if he feels he needs it.

There were a couple of types of clover growing in my mare's field, one was a ground-creeping type and she would isolate the plant then gradually pull the entire root system up out of the ground and eat it with obvious enjoyment. She was a bit strange though - I mean, who on earth enjoys snacking on reeds?!
