I remember a few years back there were claims that chopped forage took as long to eat as standard hay, anyone know if there's any truth in that or who has experimented with it?

Running out of decent hay here and I'm thinking of options. I've got one in during the day to reduce grass intake on 3kg soaked hay and 1kg straw chop. I could swap the hay for a suitable chaff but don't want it all wolfed down in an hour.

Similarly I could put him on a suitable soaked forage but not sure if that would be faster or slower to eat.

The 1kg of straw chaff is top chop zero which they're supposed to only eat if desperate but he likes it, takes about 10 mins to eat.

The only way that I found was to double net the haylage ration. Old Dobbin is now losing teeth and needs forage replacers. The soaked stuff is mixed with a grass chop to stop him from stuffing it down, and his haylage is now chopped and fed from buckets. I also wish I could find a way of making it last longer.
Tried using a trough - he tipped it over.
Tried big smooth stones in the buckets - he tipped the buckets over.
Tried a ration of small pelleted feed in a treat ball - he stamped on it.
I now divide feed between half a dozen buckets around the stable and leave him to it. At least he came through the winter looking good and I don't have to worry again until the end of summer.
