My mare has started eating wood. She had a tattie box in her field which I used to put haylage in in the winter and she never really chewed it. Now she is out she has taken a liking to it. She still gets hay in a net at her shelter and have fenced off the box. The only problem is she has been spotted chewing on my field shelter. Is there anything you can put onti to stop her eating it. I have only had her for 6 months and she never really got out that much. She looks happy and healthy and has companions beside her.

Get her a broad spectrum mineral (not plain salt) lick. Chewing wood tends to be due to mineral deficiencies.

If she just loves to chew, throw a few apple branches in her field to keep her happy!!

Good old cribbox works well, but remember to use a brush and gloves!

I would second the advice about a mineral supplement and possibly more stimulation, what do you do with her?

She is ridden just about every day in a range of jumping and flat work activities, we compete and travel to lessons every week. She has a plenty of grass and hay so keep her out of mischief and am getting a boredom ball for the field. She is better looked after than the husband. What is cribbox?

Or you can use cribstop there are lots of different ones you may need to try a few to see which ones she doesnt like! Try horslyx you can get large ones that go in the field, they really like them and they are good for them too as they have all the vits and mins they need!
