I have a couple of horses in this year who are bedded on straw. They are semi deep littered, with the beds cleaned out and changed at the weekends.

Having only mucked out on shavings, I have noticed the straw beds make my hands and clothes stink!! Is there anything I can do to combat it, especially on the hands?

Thanks in advance

In all fairness i don't know. Maybe wear gloves and have a coat souly for wearing at the yard and put it on at the yard not in the car. Seat covers for the car are always good. :)

Not much help I know but I have just switched to wood chip for this reason because when I mucked out straw on the way to work I can smell it all day in my hair and even my hands when I have scrubbed them several times! I guess if you don't want to change to something else the best option may be to have special mucking out over clothes. Good luck...:)

Change to wood pellets - no smell at all! Non horsey OH can't detect a whiff of horse, and he would let me know if he could!

Remember, if you can smell it, others can smell it a lot more than you can!

My sister was telling me the other day about some powder stuff you can get that you sprinkle on your horse's bed and it helps reduce the amonia smell... not sure about it personally as i'm not big on unneccesary things and unfortunately I can't remember the name, but it does exist

Oh guys there is a cure, I found it only recently by accident by ordering some other things from a website, ashforthequestrian.com sell Emvelo Stable+, it is a natural spray for the bedding, believe me my mare is really smelly and I certainly do not smell 'horsey' doing a bit off shopping after mucking out anymore. I used it in the lorry the other day too, my jacket does not have eau d'ammonia anymore....!

Get a box of disposable rubber gloves - car accessory shops or agricultural merchants sell them and I usually get several days wear out of one pair before I throw them away, you can feel through them to do fiddly things but your hands keep nice and clean. I have workmans overalls (have to wash them frequently so I have 2 pairs) and wellies to do stable jobs - leather boots just hold the smell but wellies can be washed off better. I have a peice of stainless steel "soap" in my kitchen to "wash" the smell of onions etc off my hands when I'm cooking and that seems to work well with food smells so would probably work on stable odours on hands too.

My OH accuses me of rolling in it as I smell so bad sometimes!! Gloves help...I have also used cat litter powder on the floor!! Also one a week disinfect it out where she wees... Jeans keep hte smell in them worse as well...whereas jodphurs don't smell quite as much!
Always have a can of Impulse on hand in the car!!
I used to use shavings and do think it is much worse on straw...shavings soaked it all up I suppose.
Am now considering the boiler suit mind you!!
