What do think I should do?

I put a saddle on ebay with a reserve of £40. It's a decent, English leather All pupose saddle, made in Essex. I put plenty of very clear photos of the saddle at all angles, included measurements and a very honest description. It's been looked after, and the tree is sound, and it is about 18 years old.
4 people were bidding. One person put 6 bids in and won it at £77. As soon as the auction ended i got an email saying they didn't actually want the saddle, and it was the daughter who bid on it.

These people entered into a contract right? They put 6 bids on, over several days. If what they say is true, that the daughter was bidding, ebays T&Cs indicate that accounts have to be held by over 18's and the mother would have been at fault by giving her password to, and allowing her daughter to bid. (this business about the daughter bidding could be a complete lie anyway, there's no way to know)

I have now incured ebay's charges, for listing the saddle and for 'selling' the saddle.
The other people who were bidding may have bid in a totally different manner if this person was not in the frame.

What total flipping timewasters.

Give it a couple of days and then open a dispute saying that they are a non paying bidder.

after four days of the dispute being open, if they still haven't paid, you can close the case and ebay will refund you your listing and selling fees.

Then you can either re-list the saddle or send out a second chance offer to the next highest bidder on the original auction.

Open a non paid item dispute and E-bay will refund your fees, then offer it as a Second Chance Offer to the underbidder or re-list.
I know your pain, one of my saddles has gone round 5 times - bought every time but not paid for, until it eventually sold

I had sell loads of stuff on ebay and the saddles always seem to get timewasters!!! YOuve got 3 options really, you can make them pay send it to them and probaly get neg feedback, tell them that they have to pay, they refuse and do an unpiad item and a mark goes on there account or do a mutual cancellation all of which your fees will be covered. Personally i would make them pay and if they dont do an unpaid item case. Your fees will then be refunded!

i will never sell horse equipment on ebay every again, i have had none payers. another who placed a bid and tried everything for me to sell it to them at a lower price. i would wait 4 days place an unpaid item strike against them so you can get your fees back.
