Ebay unsold saddle (due to not meeting reserve) - would you?

My saddle got to £130 (without postage on top) and didn't sell because it didn't meet the £150 reserve. The saddle is leather, was made for the horse and is extra wide, so by all accounts is quite a hard to come by saddle. It's also been very well looked after (and I provided pictures to show this).

We can either relist the item and incur more selling fees (which were on the higher side as I added lots of pictures and protected myself from losing the saddle for pence), or we can send a second chance offer.

The second chance offer would be sent to someone who bid upto £130 for it. Would you do that or relist? Do you think it's met its peak value in other words?

I would try it again

To be honest I would just take the £130, at least that is money in the bank, and it might get less if you list again and you will have then incurred the selling fees again. £130 in the bank is better than a saddle sitting there not being used. Just my opinion, but I guess it depends on how much you need the cash.

Not desperate for the cash tbh, but the mare died nearly 18 months ago and we've only now come round to parting with it. The saddle is far too wide for my cob George as he is medium wide. You have the same view as my husband, though. Fees would be about £5!

If you've checked out how much similar 'completed' items have sold for, then you will know how much this type/style/condition saddle would typically sell for. If you are close to this value then I would go with the '2nd chance offer' solution.

Just for future reference, you can use a site like www.auctiva.com to load pictures on to Ebay and you do not pay for the privilege!!! You can also have fancy backgrounds to make your item look even more professional.

There is a 'free pricing plan' for non commercial sellers. It is so expensive to host photos on Ebay.

Good luck

I don't know ebay prices don't seem that good at the moment. I was trying to sell a beautiful sheepskin numnah and it had
no bidders first time round on a starting price of £49 and I ended the item early on relist as few
watchers and no bidders so it was going to go for peanuts. Weird as they have
always sold extremely well before. And it was an unusual one being high wither
and fully lined with full trim. Anyhow if I am patient it will sell for the usual price

I guess if you are ok with the £130 I would probably sell and save yourself the relisting fees

I am sitting on three saddles to sell after christmas as no-one will be wanting to part with cash just now.
If you think it's worth more hang on and sell in the New Year

If it's English, good condition and extra wide I think it ought to make more than £130. I think I'd wait until after christmas and relist. I was looking for a similar saddle a few months ago and ended up paying far more than that! Or maybe try HorseQuest good quality saddles seem to sell well from there.

I've just had someone contact me offering to pay the reserve price, asking me what it is. She had bidded upto 120 but missed out to the person bidding upto 130 and didn't come back to the auction in time. I haven't relisted yet, but may offer it to her as £5 is a lot to relist, and the difference between £130 and the reserve is £20.

My second hand sprenger irons went for nearly £50 which was a big shock (no reserve and 99p start), a thorogood 50" girth went for 5.50 (also a surprise) and my synthetic leathers went for 5.50. Of all the things I expected not to sell, it was probably these three items, not my saddles and especially not extra wide ones (the extra wide synthetic one didn't sell either)!

a friend who is a complete ebay fiend told me that sometimes it takes her several tries to sell items - there is no real rhyme or reason its just who happens to be looking at the time. I think the point about Xmas is a good one too - after xmas and when people can think about riding/competing would probably be a better time!
