I was just wondering if people had heard about horses catching salmonella and ecoli from pig slurry which had been spread onto fields? is this a regular occurance?
We had a wash through of something unpleasant into the winter field where I keep my horse and after having getting covered in mud on his belly and bits as the field was such a bog he got a salmonella infection up in his sheath which had to be treated with antibiotics. When we were trying to locate the source of the contaminated water the vet did ask me if any local farmers sprayed with human or other slurry to nearby fields as with water table being so high and so much rain/flooding it would have been easy for it/that to happen. In this case it wasn't the source but that was one of the routes the vet was wondering about. I was just semi glad though it was horrid for him that it was on his skin and he hadn't ingested anything of it as salmonella can be so serious.
