Hi there.
I have been trying to find out more about Liz & Ted Edgar however the only thing I can find is that Ted was the winner of the 1972 Fancy Dress Olympia along with David Broome!

Google is also not being helpful

If anyone has some interesting facts about them it would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance

Will always remember him on Uncle Max.
Seeing him fly round big courses pretty much out of control with reins wrapped round his hands several times.

Doubt he would get away with it these days.
One of the great characters

Well, they 'produced' Nick Skelton, and I think Lesley MacNaught too (?). Daughter Marie Edgar is/was a very talented jockey as well. I'm guessing that the sponsorship deal with Everest was probably one of the first, and most susccessful such deals in equestrian history too. Liz Edgar is the sister of David Broome (

ETS: Ted Edgar won the King George V Cup in 1969 on Uncle Max too according to google

I have found out Ted won the George V Cup in 69 and something about camels which was bizarre!

I will start looking for Liz Broome as well then, see if that turns up anything more!

*edit* lol thanks Rambo that was the only info Google gave me as well!

Ted Edgar was responsible for introducing camel racing to Olympia or HOYS (can't remember which one now !).....absolutely hilarious entertainment

I'm a little too young to remember the camels but I think I may try find some videos of it!

(I am also aware that the age thing sounds weird as I have a horse from the 40/50's as my name/av!!)

I think it was '78 Olympia where there were camels and an elephant...

How come you picked Nizefella as a name? I used to look after him in his retirement!

MFH, wow thats great!

I just loved his unique jumping style, I have seen a lot of footage of him jumping and its just amazing.

Just the whole "golden era" of showjumping

He was a great horse and my Dad's favourite too! He was thrilled when I started looking after him. His owner, Wilf would be what you would class as 'one of life's gentleman', a lovely man and a brilliant rider of all sorts.
You've hit the nail on the head, it really was the golden age of showjumping, To my mind, none of the modern day riders come anywhere close not even the Whittakers - sacrilige though that might be to some! Nowadays, it's all for the money, in those days it was for the glory and way of life and if they won a fiver that was a bonus!

Yes I have read alot about Wilf and about the call that cost him the gold medal at a championship and no one complained because it wasnt the "british way". I think a lot of people nowadays would have trouble biting their tounge if there was a call they didnt agree with.

Of course back then as well many riders never got the chance to travel as they were all serving in the forces as well!

If you go to Markfield or Weston Lawns you can see Ted every Thurs and Saturday. He's always there to have a chat to sitting in his same seat, doesn't miss a trick and still chatting up the girls!! Great guy (although the famous fur coat isn't!!)

Marie his daughter still jumps a lot - the Rio Grande horses!
